A spectacular fire, seen and heard widely in the vast Port of New York. Flames and smoke billow into sky. Smoke over nearby highway. Highlights Of Mr. K's U.S. Tour Highlights of Nikita Khrushchev's historic, hectic tour of America. Motorcade. Mr. and Mrs. Khrushchev enter U.N. (police visibly present), and United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold welcomes them. Handshake. In New York, at the United Nations, Mr. K speaks at podium; he broaches a new disarmament plan, calling for total abandonment of the means to make war, under international control (a bit of nat sound in Russian from his speech). Then a whirlwind tour of the city, and Mr. K. talks and laughs with reporters at top of Empire State Building, before flying to Los Angeles, where he meets and clashes with Mayor Poulsen - and a star-studded Hollywood luncheon, where he clashes with Spyros Skouras. Strong presence of journalists & photographers at airport. Banquet, Mr. K speaking. More photographers and cameramen. Khrushchev shakes hands with costumed actors. Afterwards, he (Khrushchev) heads north by special train, still chafing at heavy security measures that hamper his wishes, on to new welcomes, new clashes and new headlines. Several POV shots from moving train, including crowds along tracks, also missile defense site, rural scenery. Journalists talk with Mr. K. on train - you'd think he was a movie star, the way they press in and show attention and smile.

Sports: Germany, Fabulous Flotilla. An international get-together of small boat builders, whose craft, only inches long, show incredible precision and craftsmanship. Ultra-realistic in appearance, they perform remarkable feats under remote control by their owners on the shore. Miniature model boats sail. Children (boys) sit along water's edge. Hands operate remote control. Little boats perform various tasks, from popping balloons on the water to driving at high speeds. Pretty neat.

Sports: Prison Rodeo The annual McAlester, Oklahoma, prison rodeo, roughest and toughest of 'em all, with fiery broncs and snortin' Brahmas meting out cruel and unusual punishment to the stripe-wearing riders. A thrill-packed spectacle. Prisoners ride bucking broncos and bulls; most get thrown off in very short time. Rodeo clowns.

Khrushchev in the Corn Belt. A.k.a. Mr. K. Down On The Farm. In the heart of the world's best corn country, Nikita Khrushchev spends the most cheerful and folksy day of his American tour on the farm of Roswell Garst, in Coon Rapids, Iowa. Mr. K. inspects the modern, ultra-efficient farming methods that are one of his major objects of interest here. Vast numbers of newsmen clash with massive security forces and with Farmer Garst in a raucous side-show to the main event. Tracking shot rural farmland. Khrushchev and a large crowd -- including press, police officers, and others -- move through cornfield. Some funny scenes of conflict -- the farmer (?) throws some agricultural product at journalists; and in another scene, a bunch of stuff is dumped from farm equipment and blows onto the press. Farm machinery comes awfully close to Khrushchev & co - a near miss. (Is this deliberate? An assassination attempt on the farm?) Mr. K looks at cattle, corn. Then Khrushchev lunches with Adlai Stevenson, dropping hints at some 'give' in disarmament negotiations. Armed man stands guard on one end of swimming pool, crowd at other end. What a wacky, strangely tense visit.

Sports: White Sox Clinch Pennant The Chicago White Sox clinch the American League pennant, their first in 40 years, as they protect an early lead against Cleveland's ninth inning bases-loaded threat. Afterwards, scenes of uproarious celebration in the Sox dressing room. Ext. Cleveland stadium with Indian mascot character on it & crowds entering. Baseball game highlights. # 11 Luis Aparicio doubles and #5, Bubba Phillips, slides into home plate just past the Cleveland catcher. #6 Billy Goodman also doubles and Aparicio comes home. Male spectators in crowd smoke cigars (?). Manager Al Lopez signals from the Sox dugout. Double play by White Sox. Spectators applaud. Post-game locker room party includes members of White Sox pouring beer (?) on one another's heads, dancing - pretty funny.

25 years ago... 1934 World Series: Detroit Tigers at St. Louis Cardinals. Such immortal diamond figures as Frankie Frisch, Mickey Cochrane, Dizzy Dean, and Ducky-Wucky Medwick. The two managers chat before game. Baseball game highlights. #12 Ripper Collins scores, sliding into home plate. #7 Joe "Ducky" Medwick gets a hit - looks like a home run. Notable spectators watching one of the most spectacular of all World Series include Henry and Edsel Ford, Will Rogers, and Judge Landis. Spectators throw litter on the field. An anti-gambling campaign is launched by New York's Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, who personally smashes the first of 1200 slot machines. The mayor takes a sledgehammer to one of the machines. Men toss slot machines from barge into water. Automotive progress notes: Inventions featured a steam-powered truck (man loads coal into it as fuel) and a collision-proof car that performs as predicted but proves a little too rugged for the people inside! "Collision-proof" automobile travels fast over very rough terrain.

1st Round Ends: Mr. K. Says Farewell, Awaits Ike in Spring. "Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev ends his hectic, historic visit to America, after talks with Ike at Camp David that the President says ended the threat to West Berlin. Taking his leave at Andrews Air Force Base, Mr. K. is in good humor, calling for more OK's in Russo-American relations." At Blair House, President Dwight D. Eisenhower escorts Khrushchev from car, shakes hands with several men including Mr. K.; Khrushchev and others wave goodbye as Ike departs. Nighttime at Andrews AFB: Khrushchev speaks at microphones (nat sound), smiling Vice-President Richard M. Nixon by his side; translator speaks in English: "From the bottom of my heart, I want to express my gratitude for your kind hospitality, for your bread and salt, as they say in our country. I hope that in the relationships between our two countries, we will be able to use more and more often the good, short American word, 'OK'. Until we meet again, friends." Nikita and Nixon shake hands.

Nature On Rampage: Hurricane in East, Snow in Rockies. The Atlantic to the Rockies, nature is on a rampage. Hurricane Gracie slashes in from the sea to batter Charleston, South Carolina, and carve a 100-mile swathe of destruction across the state. Waves crash onto shore; flooding, wind and rain, downed trees. POV from inside car, driving through flooded street, windshield wiper flapping. Aftermath damage. To the west, Denver is hit by a freakishly early and heavy snowstorm, with as much as two feet falling in some areas, to blanket the town, snarl transportation, and keep the kids home from school. Snow on trees with full foliage. Children have snowball fight, build something out of snow in front yard of house -- quaint 1950s suburban life.

In Holland, where hula hoops are still a big thing, a shaggy dog story (but a true one) about a shepherd dog named Max who takes up the hula hoop on his own with incredible, and hilarious, results. German Shepherd dog (?) watches young woman use hula hoop. Dog runs off, manages to pick up a hoop around his neck, and twirls it around and around. He looks a little insane. Cut-aways of cat, horse, bunny rabbit.

Fashion Parade: New Menswear Has Continental Flair. Menswear with a continental flair previewed on the Italian Riviera. New coats and suits ranging from the strikingly stylish to suits of classic simplicity and impressive elegance. First glimpses of new trends that will hit the American scene in seasons to come. Men (and one woman) model in outdoor location. Young couple walk along. Shots show details of the man's suit jacket - the "new lines", the belt in back. The woman smiles; tilt down to her "mannish tailored jacket." Another man models a... well, it's an overcoat, I guess, with a funky darker fabric flap along the shoulders; shots show details of the buttonholes.
