Jet In Peril A two-fold story, of the transatlantic jet that narrowly escaped destruction with 113 aboard, coming in with damaged landing gear, and the shocking sidelight of 50,000 thrill-seekers who surge across Idlewild field in New York, hampering emergency rescue teams and actually imperiling the hazardous landing try. Night. Uniformed firefighters and other men pull fire hose from truck. Plane skids along runway, major sparks flying. People deplane; crowds mill about the airplane, including one clergyman who walks by camera.

Steel Strike! As talks between union and steel industry leaders in New York come to a hopeless deadlock, the mills bank their fires and half a million across the nation go out on strike. Federal mediation efforts fail to break the deadlock, and in related industries, the effects of the strike begin to be felt, with thousands of other workers in forced idleness. Aerials of factories. Interior factory or steel mill, men in hard hats apparently extinguishing the fire that normally burns. Interiors empty industrial site. Press photographers. Men in suits shake hands. Men (striking workers) lean on signs that say things like "U.S.W. No Contract No Work. AF of L-CIO." (AFL-CIO) Idle rail yards.

Nuclear Ship Launched In Quincy, Massachusetts, the U.S.S. Long Beach, America's first nuclear surface ship, is launched by the wife of California Congressman Hosmer (the christening requires two tries to break the bottle). The vessel, which will be armed with the latest guided missiles, is toured by Admiral Hyman Rickover. Sailors, crowds, ship.

France recalls days of glory on the anniversary of the French Revolution's storming of the Bastille with flashing, glittering observances rich in military splendor, one of the most gala observances in the history of the nation. Military parade, marching men in uniform, tanks. Charles De Gaulle riding in open car. Crowds. Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe seen in background at times. Torchlight march at night. Fireworks explode, light up the sky behind a monument (?).

Castro 'Resigns' In Show Of Strength A flamboyant show of strength by Fidel Castro, whose 'resignation' as premier has Havana throngs demonstrating in fervent appeal to the revolution's leader. One result, the removal of Castro's hand picked president, Urrutia, now out of favor with the leader. In an emotional four hour broadcast, Castro shows he is still Cuba's 'maximum leader'. Castro sits at desk and speaks into microphones. Huge crowds with some banners walk through streets. Urrutia (?) shakes hands with someone. Back to Castro sitting at desk, apparently in TV studio, speaking fervently, gesturing dramatically. (It looks like he's also been sweating profusely - his shirt looks wet.)

Khrushchev In Poland Nikita Khrushchev continues his tour of Poland, drawing on an amazing reservoir of amiability for iron curtain consumption while keeping up his power diplomacy towards the free world, with an abrupt snub to Scandinavia. Khrushchev walks through applauding, smiling crowds. Crowd includes men wearing unusual-looking hats, women holding flowers, men wearing hard hats. Khrushchev is given an unusual-looking hat, puts it on, and then speaks into microphone, gesturing.

Preview Of Manned Space Flight Artist's conception films preview the first flight of a manned craft into space beyond the Earth's atmosphere. In thrilling detail is seen the rocket plane X-15, from the moment it leaves its mother plane until it arcs through space and hurtles to a landing. Neat view from below as U.S. Air Force mother plane flies with the little airplane tucked under its wing. Dishes aimed to sky. Men operate equipment in control room. Animation of the X-15 in action, landing -- looks something like a hokey science fiction cartoon.

Pamplona Festival The famous 'running of the bulls' through the streets of Pamplona in the traditional prelude to the city's classic bull-fight fiesta. It's every man a matador for a day as the brave bulls thunder through the streets and into the arena. Men flee running bulls; some fall and get a bit trampled but mostly by other people, not the bulls. Crowd in stadium. Real uniformed matador does his thing, then gets thrown to the ground by the bleeding bull and is rescued by several other men. Stupid people tricks. Dangerous.

U.S.-Soviet Track Meet. In Philadelphia, a re-match between American and Soviet track and field stars. As last year, in Moscow, our men and Russian girls dominate the events, with sensational performances by Greg Bell in the broad jump, Parry O'Brian in the shot putt, and Dyrol Burleson and Jim Grolle in the metric mile. Women runners sprint in race. Men at broad jump. Women throw discus. Men's shot put. Men run in race. Racially integrated event; some athletes and some officials appear to be African American (black).

Interior White House (?), Ike and Nixon chat, shake hands as flashbulbs go off. Airport. Rickover (?). Russian ambassador (?) shakes hands with Nixon and his wife (?). Photographers. Mr. and Mrs. Nixon wave to crowd of people gathered on roof of airport building, climb steps to board airplane.

World's First Nuclear-powered Merchant Ship Mrs. Eisenhower launches the world's first nuclear-powered merchant vessel, N. S. Savannah. When fitted out, the pioneering craft will cruise the world's sea-lanes to dramatize President Eisenhower's 'atoms-for-peace' program. Scenes of ship with scaffolding (?) around it. Large and apparently interested crowds watch Mrs. Mamie Eisenhower christen ship. Ship moves into water.

Boy Scout Jamboree 12,000 Boy Scouts from 54 lands meet in the Philippines for the 10th world jamboree, the first ever held in Asia. A spirited and impressive march marks the opening, to defy a persistent drizzle. Scouts everywhere! (I thought I also saw two girls standing by a flag pole with two boys - ?) Scouts march in national groups (Canada, USA) past a bunch of adults. U.S. ambassador (?) and Philippine president (?) are in attendance, says the VO.

Pageant women on themed parade floats, some escorted by Navy sailors; Miss Sweden, Marie Louise Ekstrom; Miss Alaska, Anna Lekanof; Miss Hawaii, Patricia Visser; spectators watching, one man has binoculars; Miss Japan, Akiko Kojima (future Miss Universe 1959); Miss Italy, Maria Grazia Buccella; Miss Iowa, Kay Nielson; Miss France, Francoise Saint-Laurent; all women are wearing one piece swimsuits; spectators; pageant women on parade floats being pushed down street by Caucasian male Navy sailors. Various horses and riders perform jumps (looks like an equestrian obstacle course, at times). Spectators clap; some look through binoculars. Vast Rally Hails Castro Fidel Castro's leadership of Cuba's masses is proved beyond dispute as vast numbers of machete-wielding peasants crowd into Havana for one of the greatest mass demonstrations ever staged in the western hemisphere, in response to his call. Castro speaks in typical dramatic fashion before huge crowds. Then, Castro puts aside politics and dons a baseball uniform to pitch a full inning in a special benefit game against an international league. The new president of Cuba (?) throws first pitch.
