A little out of focus, dull in imagery and contrast - DOS Men and machines tackle a hill with a 60 degree grade in motorcyclists' Northwestern Hill-Climbing Championships, and the winner is the hill. Not one makes the grade. Spills and thrills a-plenty. MLS - Crowd of people standing a the base of a 60 degree hill MLS - First motorcycle rider try s to ride up the hill and he cant make it MCUS - Red Brice of Portland came the closest making it the hill, he made it to the 230 foot mark MLS - A motor cyclist really tries to make the hill but only makes it a quarter of the way and then his bike flips. He has to run fast because this bike will land on top of him

Cobb climbs into his boat; he's an older gentleman wearing a hat. Boat is pulled out onto Loch Ness. TLS boat speeding along the water, then it just disintegrates (tragedy, disaster). TLS of rescue boats reaching scene of his death. [Very strange choice of newsreel music - upbeat march usually played with football footage.]

Michigan State long pass to receiver who struggles forward with a defender wrapped around his legs. Passing touchdown. Ken Brown rushes for Oregon State. Pass, then receiver runs in for TD. Successful field goal kick. Michigan State players run onto the field to celebrate with the kicker.

Train Wreck: 95 Killed, 200 Hurt In British Disaster A three-train collision in a London suburb kills at least 95, injures over the two hundred, when two expresses smash into a commuters local, at the rush hour's peak. Aerial shot; hard to see the trains. VS wreckage, people climbing on it and sorting through it, removing bodies as well as injured survivors. A group of people rip white cloths to be used in assisting the injured. Rescue work, lots of civilians cooperating in the effort.

Crowd of Japanese people stand looking as if they are waiting for something; it seems they are looking at a huge wall covered with information (election results?).

News in Brief: California, Wingless Plane. They said it wouldn't fly, but inventor Bill Horton's wingless wonder, with radical retractable stabilizers, proves the experts wrong. VS the airplane without wings, the stabilizers moving in and out. CU Horton. Tracking shot of the unusual aircraft taking off (but it doesn't fly more than a few feet off the ground in this clip). The machine looks pretty cool. Invention.

Korea: See-saw Fight Rages For Strategic Peaks. U.S. Marines helicopter, HR-69, backs up to fly low over some soldiers. Two men latch a large hook hanging from the chopper so that it connects to some sort of equipment (multiple rocket launcher???). The helicopter airlifts this item and flies away. Another helicopter (HR-5) lifts off with soldiers aboard. A few choppers fly over the hills of Korea (one view is from inside a helicopter, part of one soldier's head in the frame, looking out). The helicopters drop off the soldiers and their equipment. The marines position and load the rocket launcher(s) and let out a barrage of fire. Tanks rolls on dusty road. VS on "Old Baldy" show rocket shells, destruction, dead enemy soldiers. G.I.'s sleep (nap) in uniform with guns beside them.

The Campaign: Truman Gets Award As Ike Speaks In West. President Truman receives civil rights medal, urges hearers to vote for Stevenson, and pledges all-out support on civil rights issue. Crowd outdoors in NYC, some holding "Columbia Students for Stevenson" signs. African American men hand some sort of award to Harry Truman, and the mostly Black audience applauds. Truman speaks at podium, reminds everyone why voting for Stevenson would be a good idea - for protection against depression (economic) and full civil rights for all Americans. General Eisenhower criticizes the administration record on civil rights, tells cheering onlookers he's against 'second-class citizenship.' Eisenhower rides down street in tickertape parade. Interior of arena (Pan-Pacific Auditorium), large crowds of supporters waving signs saying "I Like Ike" (this has the feel of a convention floor but it's not the convention). Ike waves from podium, then speaks, criticizing the Democrats' lack of progress with racial discrimination.

Air Strike Over Korea. United Nations fighter-bombers pound the enemy, smashing Red positions and supplies, as ground troops repel new enemy thrust. Men on board carrier load bomb, attached to which is an actual kitchen sink (perhaps so no one could say they fired everything but the kitchen sink at the enemy, or perhaps to "sink" their foes) -- can't see much of the sink but the words "The Kitchen Sink" are stenciled on it. Pilot and "ground crew" guy (what do you call ground crew on a ship?) give one another the thumbs up sign. U.S. Navy plane takes off from aircraft carrier. Navy officers watch. Air to air shot of 3 planes flying. CU pilot in cockpit. VS subjective POV from the planes as rockets/bombs are launched and explode on ground targets. Unusual weapon, projectile.

The stands are full as procession moves along. Cardinal Spellman speaks at podium (microphone says WINS). Father Patrick Payton (sp?) also speaks at podium. Huge motto: The Family That Prays Together... Stays Together. Children and adults present join in prayer.

Merry Musical Mechanics They do everything but baby sit - these mechanical dolls, products over the last two centuries, of Swiss watchmaking genius. Children exploring these little machines at an exhibition. Some featured works: a mechanical caterpillar crawling, a very tiny music box with moving parts, fake birds chirping in cages, and an amazing person-shaped doll that sketches (and it draws very well!). Also some shots of gears turning. Amazing inventions - and they are old, many from the 18th century.

Assembly: Acheson Bars Korean Peace Of Dishonor U.S. Secretary of State Dean Acheson addresses the political committee of the United Nations, says the U.N. will not accept terms in Korea involving dishonorable compromise. VS political & security committee meeting in the U.N. Acheson seats himself, speaks to his colleagues. Soviet foreign minister (?) takes notes. Acheson speaks (nat sound), says they want to find out whether the Communists really want an honest armistice in North Korea. After the meeting, various men speak to Acheson and shake his hand.

News in Brief: Hughes Helicopter Flies. Howard Hughes' giant helicopter, world's largest, in its maiden flight. Jet engines power the huge (and I mean huge!) rotor blades. Very unusual looking. Some men pose in front of the machine (presumably one of them is Hughes). Large group of press photographers and cameramen aim their cameras. VS the helicopter with giant blades taking off, hovering. Amazing. Invention, aviation.
