Pope John XXIII and 20 cardinals follow the crystal casket of the sainted pope to a special train to carry him away. The pope and other clergy gather and pray around fancy casket. Engraving says "PIVS. PP. X". The dead pope's face and hand (seen through glass of casket), apparently covered with metal, like a statue. Unusual.

Dulles' Resignation Sorrowful At temporary White House quarters in Augusta, Georgia, President Dwight D. Eisenhower sadly announces that John Foster Dulles has resigned as Secretary of State because, stricken with cancer, he is incapacitated for carrying on the administrative load of his office. In his drama-packed announcement the President said Mr. Dulles would continue to serve as foreign policy adviser. Mr. Eisenhower led the nation and the world in paying tribute to the seventy-one year old Mr. Dulles - his wisdom, his devotion and his courage. A truly great public figure. Dulles exits a car; African American man in hat (chauffeur, perhaps?) holds an umbrella over Dulles as he walks. Man (reporter?) at typewriter. Ike speaks at press conference (nat sound), lauds Dulles, seems choked up and sounds very sad.

Eisenhower Dedicates Memorial Memorial to an Ohio Republican. At the Taft Bell Tower Memorial ceremony attended by ex-president Herbert Hoover and members of the President's cabinet, as well as all the top officers of the Democratic Congress in addition to more than 5,000 spectators. The Taft Carillon memorializes a man of Congress, the man who led the Senate during the turbulent Eightieth Congress as 'Mr. Republican', and who in 1952 lost his final battle for the presidential nomination to General Dwight D. Eisenhower. He died in July 1953 at the age of sixty-three. Bell tower structure, U.S. Capitol dome in background. Statue at bottom of the rectangular structure. The god-king to Buddhist followers has been given sanctuary by Prime Minister Nehru. Dalai Lama (Bstan-'dzin-rgya-mtsho, 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso) amid people, greets a man (some sort of ceremony involving a white cloth -- part of the greeting?). Dalai Lama climbs stairs to rostrum, a man holding a parasol over him. Dalai Lama greets much larger crowd. He drapes a white cloth around a man's neck.

It is as lavish as Russian grandeur will allow. 49-Year-old ballet star Galina Ulanova - who was somewhat less than an ideal Juliet - found nonetheless that it was her evening. Greta Garbo and a celebrity packed house turned out for the Prokofieff [Prokofiev] presentation of 'Romeo and Juliet'. Mostly young people wait, seated outside in a queue.
