Audience and scrambling press photographers ogle (or admire) ladies in swimsuits. Miss Japan is crowned. She smiles for the camera.

Despite lack of snow they soar as far as 150 feet from a ramp of the new substance with as thrilling a contest as any staged in December. Ski jumpers do their thing. His party views the Reds' nuclear-powered ice-breaker 'Lenin', after a clash over whether the visitors are being permitted the same close inspection granted Kozlov of America's nuclear ship, earlier. On many of his points of call, Nixon is greeted by hecklers, primed with anti-American questions. City street scene (VO says Leningrad). Nixon talks amid a crowd, reporter jots notes. Nixon and others tour factory, where the V.P. talks and factory workers smile and applaud (they look earnestly friendly). Ship with sign that says "Lenin." Nixon leaves ship, shakes hands with people in the crowd (presumably Soviet citizens).

The unusual vehicle -- markings say it is S.R.N.1 (SRN1, SRN 1) -- is lowered into the water. Men watch, crowds wave. Hovercraft crosses water and rides up onto sandy beach. Member of crew disembarks.

The bright and light look for fall - in London, new ladies' suits and luxury gowns, and in Milan the new continental look for the men, with buttons that glow! Outdoors near a fountain, women model autumn fashions in suits. One woman's suit coat displays "collarless" neckline. The models wear hats and gloves. Interior, women pose for the camera in satin (?) sheath dresses (strapless) to show off their slender figures. Men model suits. The buttons on one man's suit light up, blink on and off -- very unusual. Wacky fashion.

The quarry are the great herds of feral ponies descended from Spanish mustangs cast ashore in the 16th century, and the round-up is an exciting carnival of action and excitement. Herds of horses, including mothers with nursing babies. Sign for Chincoteague Island. Bronco busting - young men/boys ride bucking horses (briefly, before falling off). Crowds line the beach and watch from boats as the horses cross the water, perhaps swimming. Men in cowboy hats ride behind herd of horses down a road.

New Diplomacy: Ike And Khrushchev To Exchange Visits In a special White House press conference, President Dwight D. Eisenhower announces plans for a dramatic exchange of visits with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev this fall, to 'further the cause of peace'. Sound man with headphones operates audio equipment. Ike reads what sounds like a press release (nat sound), referring to himself in the third person, giving some details about their upcoming trips.

The captain of the elite corps is snagged in a tree-top and shows the steel-nerved calm of a torero while waiting rescue. Spectators watch men jump from planes and parachute into water. Man in uniform and man in clerical collar stare up at the man who got stuck in a tree; the man keeps his cool, smokes a cigarette while dangling. Crowds gather. Men hold a safety "net" of sorts; parachutist climbs down tree on ladder, takes a swig of beverage. Macho?

News in Brief: England, Battle Of Flowers. A Mediterranean-style carnival in the English Channel. The Isle of Jersey's 'Battle of the Flowers' wins fame for its lavish color and high spirits. Floats parade down street, people including beautiful young women wave from them. Then, a "fight" begins: people on a float decorated with flowers begin to throw the flowers at the crowd. Crowd throws some back, and even a marching band gets caught up in the childish fun. (It's like a snowball fight but with flowers.)

Golf Championship In the P.G.A. tourney (tournament) in Minneapolis, Bob Rosburg, a pro rated with hardly a chance at the first tee, comes through under terrific pressure with a 4-under-par last round to win the coveted crown. Jerry Barber (?), Doug Sanders (?). Typical golf scenes. Players tee off and putt. Crowd follows them around. Spectators use binoculars. Winner shakes hands with man, big trophy in foreground.

Sports: Long Island, NY, International Trot The first International Trot, at Roosevelt Raceway, lives up to all the advance glamour. Jamin, the artichoke-eating French champion, comes from behind in the stretch, after breaking stride and losing ground on the first turn. It's a terrific duel to the finish between top international trotters as Jamin crosses the line first by half a length. Nighttime harness race, under lights. Crowd watches (wide shots, no interesting reaction shots).
Nixon's Triumphal Return
Nixon's Triumphal Return Nearly 4,000 crowd the airport to greet Vice President Richard M. Nixon with a hero's ovation on his return from touring the Soviet and Poland. After a speech in which he urges that America show courtesy to Nikita Khrushchev on his coming visit, he proceeds to the White House where he confers with Ike. Scenes show the enthusiastic reception given Mr. Nixon in Poland, where crowds lined the streets to cheer him. Nixon rides in motorcade, standing and waving from open car. A few women from the crowd shake his hands, one gives him flowers (!). Now to America. Airplane pulls up, little girl (VO says it's Julie Nixon) climbs the stairs to greet Mr. and Mrs. Nixon. Nixon speaks at microphones to the crowd (nat sound), Pat Nixon standing behind him; he says people in Europe want peace, says the best part of leaving the U.S. is coming home again. Crowds wave as Nixon pulls up to White House. Nixon talks with President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and they shake hands for cameras. Man behind them might be Ike's brother Dr. Milton Eisenhower (?).

Fashion Parade In an amazing roof-top garden in London, a showing of the fall and winter collection of one of Britain's top designers, with heavy emphasis on tweeds and woolens, but featuring as well evening gowns of outstanding grace and elegance. London street scene, light traffic passing either side of camera, tilt up to building. Gardens, ducks swimming. Scene that looks like cocktail party, middle aged people chatting with drinks in hand. Women model cool-weather fashions. Wool coats. Ball gown, evening gown.

Sports: Pennsylvania, Weight-lifting Championships At America's 'Muscle Metropolis', York, Pennsylvania, the AAU national weight-lifting championships, which gives the would-be Hercules some truly staggering labors. The winners come through with astounding feats. Banner sign for the contest "and Mr. America Contest", it says. Weight lifters who can't quite pull it off (bloopers) -- some of these are funny; bored-looking male spectators watch (crowd reaction). Then some successful lifts.

Sports: Germany, Berlin Grand Prix. The Grand Prix of Germany, one of the select events leading to the world's auto racing championship, on the hazardous Avus track. The pace is blistering - one car rolls over, throwing the driver who miraculously escapes the terrifying spill - but only 6 of 15 cars finish. The winners, 3 Ferraris, topped by Britain's Tony Brooks with a record 139 M.P.H. Start of race. Interested spectators turn heads to follow cars. Crash: One car flips over and over; the driver, thrown from the car, gets up and walks away, to delight of those around him. Winner, still in car, receives a handshake of congratulations.

Explorer VI: Paddle-Wheel Moon Puts Eye In The Sky. Explorer VI, a 142-pound, 'paddle-wheel' satellite is fired into orbit from Cape Canaveral, equipped to draw power from solar energy and carrying a crude vision device to radio back pictures of the earth and its cloud cover as seen from the vantage of outer space. Man prepares satellite. Slightly low angle shot, man looks through binoculars. Daytime rocket launch. Educational film -type moment: Man at blackboard (chalkboard) explains drawing of the satellite's orbit, apogee and perigee.

Blast Rips Oregon Town Roseburg, Oregon, is ripped by the explosion of a truck carrying 6 1/2 tons of explosives, in the center of the business district. An eight block area is blasted to rubble, with buildings 28 blocks around badly damaged. The toll, $10 million in property, and at least 13 dead. Aerial shows smoldering buildings. Long pans of devastation and wreckage in the aftermath. One destroyed truck (?) says "FUEL" on it. No people are seen, giving it an even more devastated/abandoned feel. (This could pass for damage from war, perhaps.)

Extensive damage is reported, from Waikiki to the northern-most island of Kauai. Waves hit shoreline, seawall -- fairly large but not super-dramatic. Cars drive past palm trees that are being blown by wind and rain.
