In a formal ceremony, Secretary of State Dean Acheson and Ryuji Takeuchi, charge d'affaires, sign the ratified peace treaty, bringing the war to an official end and restoring Japan as a sovereign power. The Japanese envoy also is given possession of the embassy building after eleven years. Independence, WWII aftermath, World War Two. John Foster Dulles is present at the signing.
