President Truman's long awaited announcement comes at a Jefferson Jackson Day dinner, when he emphatically tells fellow Democrats that he will not be a candidate for re-election. He tells the nation that he will campaign vigorously for his party's nominee. Black-tie dinner event. Various shots of PRESIDENT HARRY TRUMAN, other guests. Some guests show a coon-skin cap, apparently belonging to Senator Estes Kefauver. Mrs. BESS TRUMAN applauds. Truman at podium says, "I shall not be a candidate for re-election. I have served my country long and, I think, efficiently and honestly. I shall not accept a re-nomination. I do not feel that it is my duty to spend another four years in the White House." Boos come from the disappointed crowd.

Illinois Governor ADLAI STEVENSON stands at a podium, press conference. Low angle shot of newsreel cameras. Stevenson says, "No, I can only tell you that I'm a candidate for governor of Illinois, I have no other ambitions, and that I have said repeatedly for three months." The reporters crowded around him keep prodding him, talking over one another. When asked whether he would accept the Democratic nomination, Stevenson replies that he has no comment other than his usual answer to that question, which is, "No comment. Now would you let me get out please?" he laughs. (They really are tightly pressed around him.)
