Pitts' widowed mother greets him with a kiss on the steps of the big house. Edwin C. "Alabama" Pitts with his mother, Mrs. Erma Pitts Rudd, as he stepped to freedom from Sing Sing Prison. In the fall of 1929, Pitts and 3 accomplices robbed a New York City chain store of $76.25. He was 19 years old at the time. He served 5 years and 2 months of an 8 - 16 year sentence.
