Addressing cheering thousands at Convention Hall, President Harry Truman sees 'dead hand of reaction' as leading nation to war, and pledges himself to work for amity. LS/TLSs crowds outside and inside convention hall. MS President Harry S. Truman speaking to crowd: "The United States is the hope of the world b/c we are a free people and b/c we are prosperous. When these freedoms begin to be cut down and when our great prosperity begins to wane under the dead hand of reaction, then our chances of leading the world to peace will surely be weakened. Peace is the goal of my public life. I'd rather have a lasting peace in the world than be President of the United States."
