Army Reserves Kennedy Hopeful of Early Release The President answers a question affecting the lives of thousands of families across the nation. What is the status of the 150,000 reservists who have been called into the Armed Forces? He is in a serious mood as he takes note of rumors that they will serve more than a year of duty. Kennedy walks to podium for press conference. President Kennedy states, 'We called the men in order to prevent a war, not to fight a war. And if our efforts to hold the peace should fail, then of course, they would be used in a more direct way. But, their function today, is to indicate that the United States is serious about it's commitments. That it means to meet it's commitments. That it wants to negotiate a peaceful settlement if it can, but it does not propose to surrender.' Press, journalists seated. CU Kennedy as he finishes his response.
