President De Gaulle In Africa President de Gaulle tours former French colonies in Africa, now heading towards independence. His 'fence-mending' trip to meet the colonial problem comes while another crisis looms at home with the withdrawal of U.S. warplanes from French bases. Charles De Gaulle, in that hat of his, deplanes, greets people of various ethnicities (working the crowd). Military review or parade, tanks. De Gaulle speaks at microphones and podium overlooking large crowd. People clap.
