Adenauer Stirs Political Tempest West German Chancellor Adenauer touches off one of the nation's fieriest political controversies when he reverses his prior decision to step up to the honorific post of President, and to keep the reins of power instead. The sudden development came when his likely successor, Ludwig Erhard, was visiting the United States. German newspaper headlines. Two men with newspapers. Adenauer (?) and other men walk along, some reporters, photographers around them. Erhard (?) gets out of car. Newsreel cameramen with cameras on tripods. Erhard speaks at microphones with journalists around him.
