Twenty-five Years Ago Today. Blasts from the past, and one look at the present.
Chicago's worst fire since the great fire of 1871 lays waste to the Union Stockyards. Every firefighter in the city is called out! Buildings in flames. Dramatic. Disaster. Sun peaks through billowing smoke. Aftermath, wreckage. Colonel Roscoe Turner blazes a new speed record from Detroit to New York. Little airplane comes in for landing. Pilot in plane and out, wearing goggles, leather (?) helmet, and funny little mustache! Jimmy Mclarnin and Barney Ross square away for the welterweight championship. Boxers training in front of onlookers. Jumping rope, hitting punching bag, mugging for camera. Wellesley College girls go out for the big leagues of crew racing, boating an 8-oar shell! Female athletes stroke, stroke through the water. Women rowing. In Nassau, Bahamas, a waiters' tray-carrying race caps the seasonal zaniness of 1934. Wacky contest. Pie in face for young black waiter (winner?), who takes it all in great humor.
1959's own brand of 'progress' -- collegiate 'beatniks' in Paris, carrying to the utmost the latest crazes in telephone booth packing, tiny car 'cramming', and offbeat dancing. Fun fads. Young people stuff themselves into phone booth, onto dance floor (stepping on toes is shown), onto chairs, and into little convertible (not a Volkswagen I don't think, but same idea). Silly.
