Ancient Rite Restored In Rome, Italy, Pope John XXIII revives the ancient Maundy Thursday custom, the washing of the feet. The ritual is observed this year for the first time since 1878. Ext. ornate religious building. Painted icon of Christ with halo. Pope kneeling at feet of a row of clergymen; can't really see the foot-washing but we can see the bowl of water, and the Pope is clearly kissing their feet, too.
