Hawaii Is Voted Into Union The territory of Hawaii is voted into the union as the fiftieth state, after some of the swiftest action by the U.S. Congress in years. Only the mechanics of admitting the state (some 2,000 miles from continental United States) remain. A two day celebration goes into high gear in Honolulu. Huge bonfires, aerial and offshore military pyrotechnics, and of course hula dancing in the streets. Gestures of gratitude over the prospective ending of territorial status for the islands of Hawaii. Hail! Hawaii, U.S.A. Hawaiian scouts (? - boys saluting). Children receive flags apparently designed for the occasion. Women delight the cameraman with hula dancing.
