Cyprus Settlement Hailed Three years of bitter exile ends for Archbishop Makarios - leader of the Greek Cypriots. In London he is cheered as he prepares to return to the Mediterranean island where 508 Britons and Cypriots lost their lives in four years of civil strife. The island is to get its independence within a year as the result of an agreement signed by British, Turkish and Greek leaders along with Makarios who will likely be the first president of the Republic of Cyprus. The archbishop (?) makes his way through peaceful, quietly celebrating, somewhat adoring crowds.
