Pope John Visits Prison. Tradition Totters As Pope Blesses Inmates. Pope John XXIII visits Rome's Regina Coeli Prison. It is an intensely emotional experience for the 1500 inmates as the pontiff prays in the prison courtyard and then goes among the prisoners with his characteristic warm humor and deep humility. It is one of the outstanding events on a calendar of grueling activities the Pope has maintained since his elevation to the papal throne. Convicts, some behind bars, applaud. Pope visits man in bed (hospital?), man kisses pope's hand. Overhead shot as Pope climbs into car (he's visible through sunroof).
