25 Years Ago Today 25 Years ago today--then as now, disarmament was of world concern, and the great powers met at Geneva, only to deadlock, on the issue of aerial bombardment. The US Marines had been keeping order on foreign shores. The final detachment returned from Nicaragua ending 19 years' duty, to be joyfully greeted at Quantico. Labor unrest was explosive in the grim Depression years, with violence flaring in Gallup, New Mexico, in the national miners union strike; with the milk price war in northern Illinois; at Amburg, Pennsylvania, when police fire on strikers, killing one. On the lighter side, Purdue co-eds were all shook up with a new vibration tester, and 1933 had its own ancestor of the hula-hoop, the 'bouncing bike', for fun and figure beautification all at once. Interior room with long tables, people (men) in suits moving around, looking through papers (meeting?). Men stand up from tables as if meeting is over. Large ship at dock, crowd foreground. People (including some children) in crowd wave hands and hats in greeting. Men in uniform disembark; they are greeted and greet women and children with hugs and kisses. Reunion, welcome home, homecoming. Man in helmet stands by road, car drives by. Caucasian men by road shake their fingers at an automobile driving by them. Two men in uniform on pile of rocks, one aiming a weapon. Crowd of men swarms around truck. Men in bed of truck pour white liquid from containers onto ground. Exterior, street with telephone or electric poles, some men including police, something like smoke or steam rising in background (seems to come up from street). Some of these men toss or throw things that go off screen. Men running in residential area. Odd invention or contraption: woman is seated on a two-person chair that is bouncing up and down. Man helps another woman onto the seat, then sits at a desk beside them. The women bounce up and down, smiling. [Much of the film to this point looks slightly speeded up.] Rear view of woman's bottom as she sits on and uses some exercise equipment. Voyeurism. Young women ride down the street on slightly modified bicycles; the seats lift up and down as they push with their feet.
