Whitewater Hearings July 25, 1995 - Testimony of Patsy Thomasson.
Senator Al D'Amato (R New York). Senator Paul Sarbanes (D Maryland). Senator Paul Sarbanes (D Maryland). I don't think we have any further questions. Senator Al D'Amato (R New York). I want to thank you, Ms. Thomasson, for coming in. The Committee stands in recess. Senator Paul Sarbanes (D Maryland). Mr. Chairman, before we recess, I think we ought to indicate on the record the constructive session that our counsel had with the counsel for President and Mrs. Clinton, their personal counsel, with respect to access to documents. I gather they got full access to the documents that they requested to review and that Senator Al D'Amato (R New York). They have reviewed them, I understand, and we are close to and hopefully can enter into an agreement stipulating the conditions under which we can obtain the necessary documents. We're working that out at the present time. I want to commend both counsels for their work, and hopefully we can resolve this and issue a statement this evening, or early tomorrow morning. Senator Paul Sarbanes (D Maryland). It's my understanding that apparently the conclusion was reached that the redactions were made in good faith and that nothing mentioning Whitewater was redacted. I do understand that after further discussion in an effort to cooperate further, counsel has agreed to supplement the original production of the material with additional material. Senator Al D'Amato (R New York). That's correct. Senator Paul Sarbanes (D Maryland). It's my understanding that the matter was worked out in a satisfactory way to counsel. Senator Al D'Amato (R New York). I believe that the matter is well on its way to being successfully resolved and the information that both counsels believe is pertinent will be made available and that it has been done in the proper manner. Certainly, we would thank the counsel, Mr. Kendall, for his cooperation. I think that's a fair statement. If that statement needs supplementation, I will make it. Senator Chris Dodd (D Connecticut). That's what I was going to ask about, Is it the intent at some point here in the next day or so, whenever Senator Al D'Amato (R New York). I would hope by either this evening or tomorrow morning. But the sum and substance is I believe we have the basis of an agreement that will resolve the matter, and that the materials in question that we believe are appropriate will be made available. We want to add our thanks to the counsel, and certainly I think all parties have acted in good faith on this matter.
Senator Chris Dodd (D Connecticut). I would hope as well. And I haven't had a chance to talk to Senator Sarbanes about this at all because for the average citizen when they see a redaction and things crossed out, the assumption always is people are trying to hide something. In fact, that may be the case in some instances, but if that's not the case, I think it's important that we make that clear, too, so when people do see that, they understand Senator Al D'Amato (R New York). That's what we were looking to do in the appropriate manner. That's why I appreciate the cooperation of counsel, because I think the matter was resolved in a manner which leaves no doubt that access has been provided. And that any reasonable attorney might raise certain questions as it relates to why it was not initially produced. We are satisfied that it has been produced in good faith and good effort upon our inquiry and we'll take it from there. The Committee stands in recess. We'll reconvene at 9:30 tomorrow morning.
