News in Brief: Michigan, Snyder Opens Bond Drive. Treasury Secretary John Snyder arrives to spark opening of nation's greatest bond drive since the war. Organized labor stages a mammoth float parade in connection with opening. Narrator states that this is an effort of U.S. citizens to halt further outbursts of Communist aggression.
News in Brief: Germany, The Long Road Home. Hundreds of German youngsters, homeward bound from the Communist World Youth Festival in Berlin, present a sorry sight as they file through Helmstedt before returning to their homes in West Germany. VS Aryan (Caucasian, many blond) children in train station with their luggage. Mass of youth straggle along a country road. Youths at customs/checkpoint; officials examine their luggage, toss some items (ostensibly "Communist propaganda") into a pile on the ground.
Sports: New Ski Thrill Tried. "The ski-bob makes its debut on the snowy slopes of the Bavarian Zegspitze, getting the winter season off to a novel start. Bike experts prove tops in the new sport thrill." VS young men and women riding a sort of combination bicycle and ski down a snowy hill. One rider passes by finish line and skids to stop but ends up falling over. Cute, silly, unusual winter sport.
Sports: Philadelphia, PA, High School Football. West Catholic High gridders win the city's high school championship, with a resounding victory over Bok Vocation Tech. Several 'West' backfield stars shine in the thrilling clash. VS high school football game in progress. A lot of running plays, one passing touchdown play. Spectators: some female teenage fans (teen girls) jump up and down excitedly, while a young boy bites his nails anxiously. The shots of high school students cheering are nice 1950s material.
Sports: Canada, Boxing Slugfest. With Jack Dempsey as sponsor and referee, the white house tourney proves spectacular and loaded with dynamite. In the pretime fourteen knockouts are recorded, as young hopefuls hit the deck. Al Hogan (?) vs. Joe Stack (?), two white guys boxing. The match ends and the two players embrace - talk about good sportsmanship! Man with microphone talks with the winner (no sound of this). Other matches, including one with fists really flying. Some rather dramatic knockdowns; one man leans drunkenly against the ropes after a good hit.
News in Brief: X-ray Program Begins. The Variety Clubs launch their annual mass x-ray program at the Hotel Astor in New York. Motion picture executives lead off, and the Will Rogers Memorial Hospital at Saranac plans to conduct similar programs elsewhere. People queue up for free X-ray exams. Sign: "Fight Tuberculosis! Give anything - from a penny to a million!"
News in Brief: Hollywood, New Swimsuit Fashions The latest in styles for beach beauties are alluringly displayed by a bevy of beauties, as Cole comes up with enchanting new numbers designed to please the ladies, and the men, too. Women model various bathing suits; many are strapless, one is shiny (gold, they say, but this is B&W). Convertible terrycloth outfit. Woman poses with several small children all in similar suits.
Football: Villanova 21 - Army 7. For the first time since 1915 Villanova tears through Army's depleted ranks for 21 to 7 victory. The cribbing scandal takes its toll. VS college football game. Nice passing. WS excited fans clap and cheer. Army's Coach "Red" Blaik watches from sidelines.
Football: California 35 - Penn 0 Franklin Field. The California Golden Bears turn the game into a rout as they rip Penn (University of Pennsylvania) by the lopsided score of 35 to 0. Bill Mals (???) sparks the Golden Bear victory. VS college football game. Nice long touchdown pass.
Football: Texas 14 - Purdue 0 Texas beats Purdue after a bulldog runs on the field and checks out the teams. Texas quarterback Jones receives lateral pass and gains yardage rushing. Dog disrupts the game.
Miracle Team: Giants Enter Series With Homer In Ninth. Baseball's miracle team of 1951, the stretch-running New York Giants, come from behind in a dramatic ninth inning drive to beat the Dodgers in the final game of the pennant play-off. Bobby Thomson's three-run home run off Ralph Branca turns the tide and the Giants earn the right to battle the Yankees for the World Series crown. People pour out of subway onto sidewalk, make their way to Polo Grounds. Ticket takers work rapidly. Leo Durocher and the team walk along on field. Lorraine Day (?), apparently Durocher's wife, watches from the stands, her fingers crossed. Sal Maglie pitches to Jackie Robinson, who singles and Pee Wee Reese comes in for a run. Whitey Lockman sacrifice bunt, Monte Irvin slides into third just in time. Bobby Thomson (alt spelling Thompson) hits a pop fly, giving Irvin time to tag up and run home. Ralph Branca replaces Don Newcombe as pitcher. Thomson homers, Branca looks dejected, the Giants rejoice. Close shot of team celebrating their win. Throughout the story are close shots of various fans (spectators), often excited, other reactions, too. These fans are mostly male but one is an old woman (elderly), and there seems to be a mix of white (Caucasian) and black (African American) people in the stands.
World Series: Giants Take Opener From Yankees 5 - 1 At Yankee Stadium, in the first game of the 48th World Series, Leo Durocher's 'Cinderella' team does it again. Another home run, this time Alvin Dark's in the sixth with two on, wraps it up for the polo grounders, who defeat the favored Yankees 5 to 1. Monte Irvin's dramatic steal of home against Reynolds in the first inning is another highlight of the game. Ext. Yankee Stadium. Casey Stengel and Leo Durocher before the game. Dave Koslo and Allie Reynolds shake hands. Reynolds pitches to Irvin, who singles, and Hank Thompson slides into third. MS Whitey Lockman warms up with bat. Lockman gets a hit and Thompson comes home. Irvin steals home. Gil McDougald doubles. Koslo pitches to Jerry Coleman, who singles; McDougald makes his way to third and then home to score. Yogi Berra tries to throw out Wes Westrum on steal attempt but fails. Eddie Stanky walks to first. Alvin Dark gets a home run, his teammates pat him.
Sports: Danish Gymnasts Perform On a tour of Germany, talented group of young men and women athletes stage dazzling demonstration of gymnastic prowess. Ladies first: young women perform gymnastic-type moves in unison, synchronized (reminiscent of the big nationalist PT displays of old, but this is just a small group). The men perform tumbling moves.
Football: Illinois 27 - Washington 20. Tops for thrills in the Illinois-Washington game with long romps featuring the close victory of the 'Illini' over the 'Huskies,' 27-20. VS college football game. Lots of rushing yardage. Cheerleaders bow in "we're not worthy" sort of way. Nifty play - one Illinois player runs the ball, and just as he's being tackled, the ball pops out of his hands and into the hands of a teammate -- whether purposefully or not, I don't know, but it worked, as the second man is tackled near or in the end zone.
NATO Air Exercises. The mounting air power of the Atlantic Pact nations is exhibited, as Americans, French and British join in a mass transport and parachute exhibition at strategic points. General Dwight Eisenhower shakes hands and chats with military folks. Lieut. General Norstad is there as well. Pilots and others mill about planes on the ground. VS planes flying. French paratroopers board US plane. Interior plane, paratroopers wait to jump, then jump one after another. Air to air shot, airplanes flying with parachutes deploying all around.
Royal Visitor: Washington Welcomes Princess Elizabeth Princess Elizabeth and her consort Prince Philip receives a banner welcome as they arrive by air from Canada to begin a brief visit in this country. President Harry S Truman and other dignitaries meet the royal couple, who are later entertained at a gala reception at Blair House. Elizabeth and Philip disembark, shake hands with Harry, Bess and Margaret Truman. Truman and the Princess stand on podium at airport; Princess Elizabeth speaks (nat sound): "Free men everywhere look towards the United States with affection and with hope..." The dignitaries climb into car, pass by crowds lining street (government workers?). Night, Elizabeth and Philip greet people amidst a crowd, then Elizabeth takes a podium (speech not shown).
Football: Maryland 35, Missouri 0. Unbeaten Maryland, with a devastating ground attack, snows under Missouri and brightens its hope for the Sugar Bowl. College football highlights. Sunny day but muddy field. Lots of running plays. WSs of crowds cheering. Maryland player intercepts pass on the goal line and runs 100 yards for touchdown. Shut out, shutout.
Bid for Peace: Truman Proposal Laid Before U.N. Assembly "In a dramatic bid for world peace, President Truman offers the world a new disarmament proposal based on inspection of all countries. The President's proposals are laid before the United Nations assembly meeting in Paris, where Secretary Dean Acheson and other members of the western block try again to solve the differences between east and west." First, Truman sits at a desk speaking to cameras. Truman says the key to this plan is accurate tallies of what each country has in the way of weapons, and that atomic weapons would ultimately be prohibited (!). "We are of course always ready to consider any better plan..." The President urges the Kremlin to accept the plan, says the people of the Soviet Union long for peace. Now, VS at the United Nations meeting. Dean Acheson, Anthony Eden, Andrei Vichinski (?) are present. Delegate casts a ballot. Luis Padilla Nervo steps up to rostrum and shakes hands with various people (Nervo apparently the new president of the sixth session of the U.N. General Assembly).
News in Brief: Hawaii, Escape For Submariners. Future crewmen of U.S. submarines get the final and most vital test in their training - learning how to escape from a sunken sub using the Momsen escape lung (thereby avoiding the bends). Special tower houses the tank for daring tests. Sailors march into doorway. Naval officers, one of whom apparently is Admiral Charles B. "the Swede" Momsen, who invented the escape lung they are using. Low angle of tower where the tests are being conducted. Two men, one with a camera (VO identifies him as newsreel cameraman Jimmy Lederer), climb into a capsule-type thing. Capsule submerges. Underwater and above water shots of the men involved in the test.
News in Brief: Italy Gets U.S. Ships. Two destroyers and six gunboats are transferred to the Italian flag by Ambassador Dunn. Part of mutual aid pact, the warships will boost Italy's defensive strength in vital seas. Various shots of the naval ships at dock, the ceremonies handing them over.
Sports: Boxing Scoreboard. A big 'first' in boxing is scored during fight between Harry Matthews and Dutch Culbertson. An electric scoreboard (this is a technological innovation) keeps the fans informed of bout progress, round by round. Nice shots of the two boxers in robes before the match. VS boxing match, some shots show the new scoreboard in bg. Referee and judges use electric controllers to register their decisions. Male boxing fans in the crowd.
Sports: Utah, Auto Speed Records. Last race for Ab Jenkins, 68, and his famed 'Mormon Meteor.' Ab chalks up 24 new speed marks before his racer catches afire, forcing Jenkins to jump for his life. (Nothing that happens is as dramatic as that sounds.) VS Jenkins speeding in his car, people watching, ending with small amounts of smoke coming from the car.
Korea: Marshall Says Troops Must Insure Security. Hopes for a quick armistice in Korea are seen as cease-fire talks are placed on agenda of new truce talks at Kaesong. Meanwhile, in Washington, Defense Secretary George Marshall says the U.N. aim is to insure a peaceful settlement and provide for a unified Korea. Korean men (all wearing same type of clothing -- are these military men?) aim motion picture and still cameras (press? journalists?). United Nations officials sit on a front step of building. VS officials coming to the meeting; Caucasian and Korean folks (some are journalists) gather around and chat. A friendly, more relaxed atmosphere -- one man brings a beverage to others. (They seem so hopeful -- it's sad, then, that the war didn't end for another two years.) Secretary Marshall speaks to camera about the goal of a unified Korea.
