Bid for Peace: Truman Proposal Laid Before U.N. Assembly "In a dramatic bid for world peace, President Truman offers the world a new disarmament proposal based on inspection of all countries. The President's proposals are laid before the United Nations assembly meeting in Paris, where Secretary Dean Acheson and other members of the western block try again to solve the differences between east and west." First, Truman sits at a desk speaking to cameras. Truman says the key to this plan is accurate tallies of what each country has in the way of weapons, and that atomic weapons would ultimately be prohibited (!). "We are of course always ready to consider any better plan..." The President urges the Kremlin to accept the plan, says the people of the Soviet Union long for peace. Now, VS at the United Nations meeting. Dean Acheson, Anthony Eden, Andrei Vichinski (?) are present. Delegate casts a ballot. Luis Padilla Nervo steps up to rostrum and shakes hands with various people (Nervo apparently the new president of the sixth session of the U.N. General Assembly).

Future crewmen of U.S. submarines get the final and most vital test in their training - learning how to escape from a sunken sub using the Momsen escape lung (thereby avoiding the bends). Special tower houses the tank for daring tests. Sailors march into doorway. Naval officers, one of whom apparently is Admiral Charles B. "the Swede" Momsen, who invented the escape lung they are using. Low angle of tower where the tests are being conducted. Two men, one with a camera (VO identifies him as newsreel cameraman Jimmy Lederer), climb into a capsule-type thing. Capsule submerges. Underwater and above water shots of the men involved in the test.

News in Brief: Italy Gets U.S. Ships. Two destroyers and six gunboats are transferred to the Italian flag by Ambassador Dunn. Part of mutual aid pact, the warships will boost Italy's defensive strength in vital seas. Various shots of the naval ships at dock, the ceremonies handing them over.

An electric scoreboard (this is a technological innovation) keeps the fans informed of bout progress, round by round. Nice shots of the two boxers in robes before the match. (Nothing that happens is as dramatic as that sounds.) VS Jenkins speeding in his car, people watching, ending with small amounts of smoke coming from the car.

Korea: Marshall Says Troops Must Insure Security. Hopes for a quick armistice in Korea are seen as cease-fire talks are placed on agenda of new truce talks at Kaesong. Meanwhile, in Washington, Defense Secretary George Marshall says the U.N. aim is to insure a peaceful settlement and provide for a unified Korea. Korean men (all wearing same type of clothing -- are these military men?) aim motion picture and still cameras (press? journalists?). United Nations officials sit on a front step of building. VS officials coming to the meeting; Caucasian and Korean folks (some are journalists) gather around and chat. A friendly, more relaxed atmosphere -- one man brings a beverage to others. (They seem so hopeful -- it's sad, then, that the war didn't end for another two years.) Secretary Marshall speaks to camera about the goal of a unified Korea.

Auriol of France attends ceremony during which 'Ike' takes title to headquarters from which defense of Western Europe is planned. Aerials of buildings (VO says new buildings for Supreme Headquarters of Allied Powers in Europe). Ceremony. Flags of the various nations involved are unfurled/raised.

Free-wheeling version of ice hockey proves thrilling sport for Barcelona rooters (crowd, spectators), who go wild when Spanish team edges out Portuguese champs in scoring duel. Thrilling Yacht Regatta. England's finest boats, manned by expert yachtsmen, provide real thrills at the Cowes Regatta, as they tear along in a stiff breeze. VS yacht race, including objective views as well as views aboard ship of crew at work, mast and sail, etc. Nice POV shot from ship (some of deck and sail in frame), looking forward as it moves through the water, waves splashing up onto ship.

News in Brief: Portugal's New President. General Craveiro Lopez, Portugal's newly elected president, gives an interview to the foreign press and is sworn into office. VS Lopez (?) in business suit shaking hands with people (press? it's unclear). Exterior, Lopez (?) in full military dress uniform exits car, enters building. Crowd applauds him as he comes back down the stairs after the ceremony.

Sports: Texas, Junior Rodeo. The hard riding junior cowpokes show they can take it, as they tangle with junior critters in the Southwest Championship Junior Rodeo. At what looks like a bar or tavern, men check their guns upon entering -- only it's actually a soda fountain and the "guns" are water guns. Cute, funny. VS rodeo, young riders get thrown from bucking broncos and bulls. Dangerous activity for children!

Korea: UN Planes Continue Blasting Red Targets Despite increased enemy ground fire and threats of Russian jet interception, propeller-driven 'Mustangs' continue to blast enemy positions on ridges with rockets and jelly bombs. Behind the front, a crippled B-26 bomber comes in for a belly landing after being damaged in battle. Pretty cool air-to-air and air-to-ground shots of planes flying, firing rockets (strafing). Bomber crash lands pretty successfully, crew scrambles away from damaged plane. Pilot (?) gestures to another man as if to explain his crash landing (they're all smirking so this looks staged).

Film Stars in Fashion Parade. Film stars parade in historical costumes during colorful style show before the ladies of the society of motion picture and television engineers. Ann Blyth (evening gown in style from 1800s), Joyce Holden, Susan Ball (gown, also looks like 1800s, and a black fan in her hand), Wanda Hendrix, Piper Laurie and Lynn Bari (the latter two in flapper-type outfits) model costumes they wear in new U-I (Universal-International) feature pictures.

Notre Dame is completely outclassed in lopsided game won by Spartans, 35-0, making them the nation's no. 1 team. Shutout, shut out. A lot of rushing plays, also a pass received in the end zone (and a male cheerleader begins jumping up & down in background).

The full-rigged ship 'Amerigo Vespucci' sails up the bay escorted by Italian destroyers turned over by the U.S. Enroute to the Naval Academy, the ship is inspected by American Navy officers. Nifty ship with lots of masts and sails (to this untrained eye it looks like an antique or re-creation of an old ship). Vice Admiral Hill (?) arrives, inspects crew of midshipmen (sailors). About a dozen men wearing shorts climb rigging.
