News in Brief: Washington, Baby Gorilla Takes Bow. 'Bobo,' a 5-month-old, 18-pound gorilla, whose parents were killed when he was captured in Africa, is being raised as 'one of the family' by Will Lowman, who hopes to raise him for future sale to circus. White family gaze down at baby gorilla, who is lying in a bassinet or cradle and drinking milk from a baby bottle. VS human baby girl in the bassinet along with the gorilla; she doesn't look too pleased. White man begins to tend to the baby gorilla's diaper; nice shot of him looking the role of competent dad, putting a diaper pin in his mouth while he fidgets with something off-screen (presumably the baby gorilla). Ski Season: Top Flight Jumpers in Tokle Memorial. Night ski jumping with the aid of flares, and the annual Tokle Memorial jump, get the season off to an exciting start. War Prisoners: Release of Red List Spurs Hope of Safety. "The sudden release of 3,198 American prisoners-of-war held by the Reds in North Korea brings hope to the families of the men that they may soon be returned. As the names of POWs are flashed into the Pentagon and thence into U.S. homes, heart-warming scenes unfold. Mrs. William Dean, wife of the missing general, pins her telegram on the Christmas tree." Exterior, military police (MPs) guarding tent. United Nations and Korean representatives go inside tent, conduct a meeting. Sign above a door, "Army Communications Center." Interior, communications center men working (looks like they're doing something with long strips of ticker tape). VS American POWs, some looking gaunt or wounded, apparently upon their release. VS Major General William Dean. Mailbox of Wm. F. Dean. Mrs. Dean reads telegram, smiles, holds it up against Christmas tree. Another woman (wife, homefront) says prayer, then kisses photograph of her loved one overseas. Shot of a soldier's parents opening telegram, kissing in their joy. The mother says, "He's alive!" and expresses her joy and hope; emotional moment, even if she's speaking just because the camera is there.
News in Brief: San Francisco, Sunken Ship Blasted. The sunken Navy hospital ship 'Benevolence,' sunk during a collision last year, is blasted by salvage experts as a menace to navigation. Tons of high explosives do the job. VS men at work on smaller boat, handling bags of explosives. MS gloved hands pushing plunger to set off explosives. WS fairly calm-looking sea, then a huge explosion in the distance on the water. VS debris in the water.
Operation 'Hot Foot.' "Already in use against the Reds are emplaced flamethrowers, made of cartridge cases, blasting caps and napalm gasoline that can be detonated to stop attacking forces. Spectacular fireworks - and a July Fourth display to stop the Reds." (Yikes!) U.S. soldiers watch demonstration. Close shot of soldier's hands turning detonator to set it off. Old Dogs And New Tricks. When monkeys go to the dogs, and vice versa, you're in for the most frolicking session of laughs and tears in many a moon. Zoo curator takes 'Pete' with him when he feeds the monkeys, and doggone if Pete doesn't get all snarled up in monkeyshines. Man opens door with sign above, "No dogs allowed in this building", and whistles. Dog comes running. Dog and his owner visit the monkeys. Dog and monkeys tease, taunt one another, on opposite sides of the cage fencing. Then they go INSIDE a cage, where the dog (good-naturedly, it seems) chases monkeys who swing down near him. It's like animals playing tag.

VS Churchill, sometimes with Eden, arrives at various locations; at one point General Dwight Eisenhower of NATO introduces Churchill to various other men in uniform.

Sports: California, Browns vs. Rams VS professional football game between the Cleveland Browns and the Los Angeles Rams, at the Los Angeles Coliseum. VO says this is the championship match. Otto Graham and the Browns score passing touchdown. QB Norm VanBrocklin (Van Brocklin) passes to Tom Fears, who keeps running despite a defender clinging to him and almost scores; a teammate makes the rushing TD. Graham makes a long running play. 1951 Sports Highlights. In a big year of sports, thrills and chills and spills provided plenty of spectator appeal, and from the tops of these, the editors of Universal newsreel select the most exciting sport events of 1951. Montage of various summer and winter sports scenes. Baseball: The story-book pennant finish of the New York Giants was one of the big sporting highlights of 1951. Climax to a dramatic race between the Dodgers and Durocher's 'miracle team' was the third play-off game, in which Bobby Thompson blasted his ninth-inning home run. Wow, you should see these players jump and skip like boys, so excited. Close shots men in the stands (spectators) cheering excitedly. Team carries player on its shoulders (presumably Bobby Thompson). Basketball: The big titans of the court, Brigham Young and Kentucky, were overshadowed by the story bigger than basketball itself -- the scandals that broke into the headlines. Football: Football had its scandal, too, with the West Point dismissals that wiped out a once-mighty grid team. But then there was Princeton's Dick Kazmaier, no. 42, hero of the season. Horse Racing: The richest Kentucky Derby in history brought a hitherto-unknown long-shot to the fore. Count Turf, hitting the jackpot, with slow-motion scenes recording his stunning upset victory. Golf: VS Ben Hogan golfing at Birmingham, posing with trophy. Boxing: The two-fisted drama of 1951 in boxing was the rise to power of the veteran Jersey Joe Walcott, who defeated Ezzard Charles to win the heavyweight title at Pittsburgh. Track and Field: Top man in the track & field was the 'skyclimbing parson' - Rev. Bob Richards of California, becoming the second man in history to top 15 feet in the pole vault. The athlete's celebration on achieving this goal is shown is slow motion. Jumping for joy.
Eisenhower: Sen. Lodge Tosses Ike's Hat in GOP Ring Sign over doorway, "Eisenhower Headquarters," with two American flags flanking the door. Two female legs with pro-Ike slogans written on them (I like Ike, etc.), tilt up. Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., speaks at a press conference to reporters, a large photo of General Dwight Eisenhower behind him: " General Eisenhower has personally assured me that he is a Republican. His name therefore cannot be entered as a Democratic candidate in the New Hampshire primary or elsewhere." Includes shot of one reporter in audience apparently asking a question (no SOF). Campaign.
State of Union: Truman Warns War Is Still a Threat. In his State of the Union address before the reconvened Congress, President Harry S Truman warns the U.S. of the ever-present menace of aggression, and calls for a united effort in an election year to strive for strength and unity. Mr. Truman also blasts Russia's refusal to accept the West's disarmament program. Truman arrives with Congressmen and Senators applauding. Truman speaks (SOF) about the proposal for disarmament that had been brought to the United Nations, says that until the Soviet Union accepts this plan, the U.S. has no choice but to build its defenses. "The world still walks in the shadow of another world war." The President talks about the need for strength, says that moral strength is the most vital. Applause at end of speech.
The Sea Wins: Enterprise Sinks Despite Heroic Fight Courageous Captain Kurt Carlsen, who stuck to his foundering ship the 'Flying Enterprise' during anxious days following a hurricane, is rescued when the freighter finally goes down, only fifty miles from harbor and safety. Late news films show terrific waves lashing the crippled ship, from which Capt. Carlsen radios his plight to U.S. destroyer. Shots from sea and from air of the listing ship on the waves. Shots on board of the crew doing something unknown (they pack a tube with something; one sailor fires a gun that shoots off something attached to a string; not sure what they're doing). Audio track include the captain's voice communicating by radio. POV from on board ship as waves wash onto the deck. Crippled ship in stormy seas.
Hero's Welcome: Falmouth Overwhelms Skipper of Enterprise. It's a hero's welcome for Captain Kurt Carlsen of the 'Flying Enterprise.' The doughty skipper who stuck with his crippled freighter for 13 days is overwhelmed by the reception tendered him a Falmouth. Spectacular films of the sinking of the stricken ship, plunging to the bottom in 240 feet of water. VS listing ship beginning to sink in rough seas, cargo and other debris all around. LS of a destroyer in rough seas. The crippled ship finally goes under and sends up a spray of water. VS Carlsen arriving at ceremony, carrying flowers while escorted by local dignitaries; members of his family and the press await. Carlsen speaks at microphones to the admiring crowd, says he regrets not bringing the ship back, thanks his supporters. Group of newsreel cameramen operate their cameras. Brief interview; "What are you going to do now?", to which Carlsen replies, "I'm going to sleep." The captain and others walk through a waving, cheering crowd.
