Heavenly Bodies The newest in swim suits are displayed, but even if the girls never went near the water, the beach would be an attractive place. Swimsuit models walk along outdoor runway in one-piece bathing costumes; well-dressed, mostly female audience applauds. Young woman models old-fashioned type swimsuit that covers her whole legs. Female model removes two layers of skirts to get down to her swim suit. Two women show off two piece suits (which don't look like they're two-piece). Two models wear bathing suits with ruffled top/bra areas; they remove their matching skirts. Typical voyeuristic male narration.
Sports: French Soccer. There is fast action in the French soccer finals as players compete for the right to go to the Olympics this summer in Finland. French President Vincent Auriol watches from the stands, looking quite anxious, then relieved and pleased after a goal (goal shown in slow-motion). High angle and ground-level shots are shown; several goals are scored on both ends of the field.
Aviation in the News: Very Versatile Vehicle. A versatile vehicle, at home on land or in the air, sheds its wings upon landing and then drives off into city traffic. It's got everything, even a pretty girl along for the ride. Small plane (it's called the "Airphibian") lands on runway, taxis. People remove the wings and the propeller. Funny-looking, unusual car drives along; it's a convertible, so they drive along in traffic with the top down.
Aviation in the News: Helicopter Gets Nod. The first transport helicopter certified by the CAA for regular scheduled airline takes off at the Sikorsky plant and goes through its amazing paces for the newsreel cameras. Inventor/designer/aviation pioneer Igor Sikorsky receives a certificate, shakes someone's hand. Various shots of Sikorsky helicopter spinning in circles (scary!), flying about. Pretty cool.
News in Brief: New Jersey, International Fashion Revue. Swank new styles for play and for evening wear designed by artists from two continents, are alluringly displayed by pretty models in the 2nd international fashion revue. Runway models show off evening gowns with very full skirts, lots of fabric (post-war prosperity). Women models suit with long skirt. A funny two-piece suit with short plaid or tartan pants, somewhere between shorts and capri length. Bermuda shorts.
News in Brief: Children's Fairyland. Nursery rhymes and fairy tales step right out of Mother Goose on two oak-shaded acres of a downtown park. The $50,000 fairyland is an ingenious children s' zoo, and do the small fry love it! Families tour the attractions that feature the subjects of various children's stories, etc.
Sports: Golden Gloves Boxing. Tom Roberts versus Isaac Vaughn or Vaughan (SP?); the latter wins. Floyd Patterson vs. Eddie Jones; Jones beats on him a while, but Patterson comes back to win.
Sports: Canada, Small Fry Skiing. Well-bundled Caucasian children ride tow rope up hill, ski the snowy slopes. Some of the little kids (they're wearing numbers for a competition) fall down. Little girl cries a bit; sexist male chauvinist voice-over says "Isn't that just like a dame?"
Truman Bows Out! Harry Truman says he won't run for re-election as president, and reporters question Adlai Stevenson.
French Fashion Figures. Paris in the spring spurs the couturiers to some efforts that give milady's figure the full French treatment. Women model fashions outdoors in a lovely park. One woman wears a dress in white pique, black satin jacket, large felt hat, and large faux pearls or large white beads tight around the neck. More dresses - some seem to have skirts made of chiffon or similar material - very light material, feminine. Also some interesting hats - one wide-brimmed straw hat, and a small hat with short veil over one model's eyes. Many of the women wear elbow-length gloves.
Jeepers Creepers! Jeepers but no creepers are these jeep jockeys who dash around the ridges. It takes a good man to stick under these conditions. Off-road racing in jeeps; flying up over hills, fording streams, crushing small tress, struggling in mud. Muddy man kisses woman, leaving her laughing, with a muddy face. Looks like fun (the race, that is).
Sports: Badminton Championships. In the All-England badminton championships a Malayan team is pitted against a Danish pair and the Malayans return home with their title intact, after lightning fast action. Mixed doubles.
Sports: Basketball Champs. When the chips are down for the coveted double-A crown Kansas Jayhawks top the Brooklyn St. John's in tidy fashion. At University of Washington in Seattle, it's the NCAA championships. Various shots of this college game; it's old-school ball, no dunks, a lot of passing. One player driving down the court has the ball knocked away, and then several different players take turns scrambling and trying to recover it; the opposing team finally does get it, and as they drive toward the basket there's a foul. The free-throw shot (foul shot) is granny style (underhand, from between the legs!) but hey, it works.
Sports: Skating Queen Takes Bow. 19-Year-old Jacqueline DuBief of Paris, first French world figure skating champ, delights Radio City onlookers with an exhibition of her skating artistry. Graceful figure skating, some slightly slow motion.
News in Brief: Ejector Seat. The U.S. Navy unveils its latest pilot safety device - an ejector seat that crashes the pilot through a plexi-glass canopy for a distance of sixty-five feet. Close shot of Navy pilot in plane, the hatch coming down to close the plane. Men load a dummy into the seat of a plane. Interesting shot of a man standing with large number cards (maybe 4 feet tall), and he flips them down so that it's a countdown: 5,4,3,2,1, FIRE. Slow motion of dummy ejecting in ejector seat, flying through the air into a safety net. They don't explain how the pilot is supposed to survive the fall after ejecting!
News in Brief: German Circus. "Did you ever kiss a tiger? Well this trainer does and cuffs him around to boot and then twists his tail." Acrobats. Clown (no makeup) pantomimes going down stairs then up stairs. VS audience applauding. Man dressed like Tarzan kisses tiger, then bats the tiger around the face. The man follows the tiger with a knife, as if to attack it; the trained tiger obligingly walks backwards in a circle, then finally flees when the trainer opens a cage door.
Sports: Horse Olympics. The cream of the America's equestrians show the stuff they hope to demonstrate on the American team at the Olympics in Finland this summer. Various horses are led, tended near stable. CU smiling woman in riding hat (Marjorie Haynes?). Woman and horse demonstrate some of their equestrian skills for the camera. Male riders tackle jumps, ride through a forested area, even in water.
Sports: Maryland, Kid Clouters. "The five-year-old sons of Navy officers mix it with gloves that are almost as big as they are. The fellow on the receiving end looks to his corner for advice." Navy man rings bell. Little boys boxing. One keeps hitting the other, who doesn't seem to know what to do; he tries backing away, turning to his dad who pushes him right back into the match. Either funny or sad, depending on your point of view.
Indo-china: Offensive Mops Up Reds in Rice Bowl. Indochina (Vietnam) In a renewed offensive, French colonial forces round up Communists that have infiltrated the rich rice bowl of northern Indo-China. With heavy artillery and napalm bombs they blast villages in which the Reds entrenched themselves. Vietnam. Montage of big guns (artillery) firing. French soldiers (fg) watch planes drop bombs, seem to cheer the flaming explosions in the distance. A group of Vietnamese villagers, one holding a white flag, approach to surrender. The VO calls them "Viet Minh rebels" but they sure don't look threatening, as many of them are old men. Caucasian man examines the injured arm of a Vietnamese boy - very sad, somewhat gruesome. Prisoners of war (POWs) sit on the ground, as French soldiers hand out cigarettes to them. French troops wade through rice paddies. Many refugees walk by, carrying their belongings with them.
Ike Quits NATO: General to Return to U.S. by June 1st. Ike sends his request to be relieved of his post as commander in chief of Western Europe's armies. He explains what his status in the army would be should he be nominated at GOP convention. Dwight & his wife Mamie Eisenhower shakes hands with people greeting them in receiving line. Shots of Ike's letter. Large group of press photographers ready their cameras, snap photos of Eisenhower. Eisenhower, wearing glasses, speaks for the cameras: "I have not submitted my resignation from the American Army. I have forwarded a request that I be relieved from my current military assignment and placed on inactive status. If, however, I should, because of the current effort, be nominated this July to political office, I shall promptly submit to the President my resignation as an officer of the Army. From that point on, I would be as free to act and speak as any other citizen, without any of the limitations imposed by the traditions of the military establishment."

Second N.J. air crash in 38 days claims lives of 29, six of them inhabitants of homes demolished when twin-engined airliner plummets to earth during instrument landing at Newark Airport. Various night shots of firefighters at work among the wreckage which is or fire despite rain falling. Rescue workers remove bodies of victims. Library shot of former Secretary of War Robert Patterson, one of the dead. Night shots of buildings affected by the crash. Day scenes of the aftermath, destruction. Among the wreckage: a baby carriage and a bicycle. Tragedy.
News in Brief: Kefauver Hat In Ring. Senator Estes Kefauver of crime investigation fame announces his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination. Wife and child join Senator during his press announcement. Reporters at the press conference take notes. Estes gives his wife a kiss on the cheek for the camera, while his daughter (presumably) watches.
Sports: France, Doggy Soccer Match. Trained boxer dogs amaze first-nighters with a doggy exhibition of soccer. Trainer who doubles as referee is busy guy keeping balloon in front of his amazing pooches. At the end the dogs pop the balloon.
NATO Report: President Outlines Foreign Aid Needs. President Truman appeals for national unity and for national support of NATO - the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The president urges expenditure of almost $8,000,000,000 to help build up western democracies against Red aggression. President Harry S. Truman sits at desk, looking blankly about while waiting for his cue. Then he speaks for the cameras: "This is not a program to carry the world on our shoulders. It is a program to make it possible for the world to stand on its own feet... We can afford this program." He also says the real threat to the U.S. is "the danger of Communist aggression... This is the way we can strike the hardest blows against Russian Communism."
