Indo-china: Offensive Mops Up Reds in Rice Bowl. Indochina (Vietnam) In a renewed offensive, French colonial forces round up Communists that have infiltrated the rich rice bowl of northern Indo-China. With heavy artillery and napalm bombs they blast villages in which the Reds entrenched themselves. Vietnam. Montage of big guns (artillery) firing. French soldiers (fg) watch planes drop bombs, seem to cheer the flaming explosions in the distance. A group of Vietnamese villagers, one holding a white flag, approach to surrender. The VO calls them "Viet Minh rebels" but they sure don't look threatening, as many of them are old men. Caucasian man examines the injured arm of a Vietnamese boy - very sad, somewhat gruesome. Prisoners of war (POWs) sit on the ground, as French soldiers hand out cigarettes to them. French troops wade through rice paddies. Many refugees walk by, carrying their belongings with them.
Ike Quits NATO: General to Return to U.S. by June 1st. Ike sends his request to be relieved of his post as commander in chief of Western Europe's armies. He explains what his status in the army would be should he be nominated at GOP convention. Dwight & his wife Mamie Eisenhower shakes hands with people greeting them in receiving line. Shots of Ike's letter. Large group of press photographers ready their cameras, snap photos of Eisenhower. Eisenhower, wearing glasses, speaks for the cameras: "I have not submitted my resignation from the American Army. I have forwarded a request that I be relieved from my current military assignment and placed on inactive status. If, however, I should, because of the current effort, be nominated this July to political office, I shall promptly submit to the President my resignation as an officer of the Army. From that point on, I would be as free to act and speak as any other citizen, without any of the limitations imposed by the traditions of the military establishment."

Wife and child join Senator during his press announcement. Reporters at the press conference take notes. Estes gives his wife a kiss on the cheek for the camera, while his daughter (presumably) watches.
Sports: France, Doggy Soccer Match. Trained boxer dogs amaze first-nighters with a doggy exhibition of soccer. Trainer who doubles as referee is busy guy keeping balloon in front of his amazing pooches. At the end the dogs pop the balloon.
NATO Report: President Outlines Foreign Aid Needs. President Truman appeals for national unity and for national support of NATO - the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The president urges expenditure of almost $8,000,000,000 to help build up western democracies against Red aggression. President Harry S. Truman sits at desk, looking blankly about while waiting for his cue. Then he speaks for the cameras: "This is not a program to carry the world on our shoulders. It is a program to make it possible for the world to stand on its own feet... We can afford this program." He also says the real threat to the U.S. is "the danger of Communist aggression... This is the way we can strike the hardest blows against Russian Communism."

This northernmost Japanese island in a scene of appalling devastion following a severe earthquake and tidal wave that lashes the coastal area. Scores are dead and hundreds injured as buildings ang homes toppled. Damaged buildings. People pick up belongings (maybe in a bookstore or library, looks like they're picking up books).

News in Brief: Washington, Baby Gorilla Takes Bow. 'Bobo,' a 5-month-old, 18-pound gorilla, whose parents were killed when he was captured in Africa, is being raised as 'one of the family' by Will Lowman, who hopes to raise him for future sale to circus. White family gaze down at baby gorilla, who is lying in a bassinet or cradle and drinking milk from a baby bottle. VS human baby girl in the bassinet along with the gorilla; she doesn't look too pleased. White man begins to tend to the baby gorilla's diaper; nice shot of him looking the role of competent dad, putting a diaper pin in his mouth while he fidgets with something off-screen (presumably the baby gorilla). Ski Season: Top Flight Jumpers in Tokle Memorial. Night ski jumping with the aid of flares, and the annual Tokle Memorial jump, get the season off to an exciting start. "The sudden release of 3,198 American prisoners-of-war held by the Reds in North Korea brings hope to the families of the men that they may soon be returned. As the names of POWs are flashed into the Pentagon and thence into U.S. homes, heart-warming scenes unfold. Mrs. William Dean, wife of the missing general, pins her telegram on the Christmas tree." Exterior, military police (MPs) guarding tent. United Nations and Korean representatives go inside tent, conduct a meeting. Sign above a door, "Army Communications Center." Interior, communications center men working (looks like they're doing something with long strips of ticker tape). VS American POWs, some looking gaunt or wounded, apparently upon their release. VS Major General William Dean. Mailbox of Wm. F. Dean. Mrs. Dean reads telegram, smiles, holds it up against Christmas tree. Another woman (wife, homefront) says prayer, then kisses photograph of her loved one overseas. Shot of a soldier's parents opening telegram, kissing in their joy. The mother says, "He's alive!" and expresses her joy and hope; emotional moment, even if she's speaking just because the camera is there.
News in Brief: San Francisco, Sunken Ship Blasted. The sunken Navy hospital ship 'Benevolence,' sunk during a collision last year, is blasted by salvage experts as a menace to navigation. Tons of high explosives do the job. VS men at work on smaller boat, handling bags of explosives. MS gloved hands pushing plunger to set off explosives. WS fairly calm-looking sea, then a huge explosion in the distance on the water. VS debris in the water.
Operation 'Hot Foot.' "Already in use against the Reds are emplaced flamethrowers, made of cartridge cases, blasting caps and napalm gasoline that can be detonated to stop attacking forces. Spectacular fireworks - and a July Fourth display to stop the Reds." (Yikes!) U.S. soldiers watch demonstration. Close shot of soldier's hands turning detonator to set it off. Old Dogs And New Tricks. When monkeys go to the dogs, and vice versa, you're in for the most frolicking session of laughs and tears in many a moon. Zoo curator takes 'Pete' with him when he feeds the monkeys, and doggone if Pete doesn't get all snarled up in monkeyshines. Man opens door with sign above, "No dogs allowed in this building", and whistles. Dog comes running. Dog and his owner visit the monkeys. Dog and monkeys tease, taunt one another, on opposite sides of the cage fencing. Then they go INSIDE a cage, where the dog (good-naturedly, it seems) chases monkeys who swing down near him. It's like animals playing tag.
