(09:40:33) Ms. WILLIAMS. Yes, Senator, that is correct. Senator D'AMATO. And you then called up some people to get them together because Roger was coming over to make that announcement? MS. WILLIAMS. Well, what Mr. Altman said to me, when he called me, and I do not remember if he called me specifically, if that was the reason for his call. It could have been other things, like Health Care too, but then he said I have decided not to recuse myself, and I would like to tell some people there. And as my statement reflects, I am not quite sure if he told me who to gather, or I just guessed who should be involved. Senator D'AMATO. Did he mention George Stephanopoulos, to get him? MS. WILLIAMS. As I said, I do not recall how we actually came to that. He could have named the people that he wanted to talk to, or I could have just guessed that this would be the group. Senator D'AMATO. Let me ask you something. In the case of Whitewater, have you ever expressed your opinion, and I am now quoting from a diary that Mr. Altman had, that "Hillary Clinton was paralyzed by it, and if we do not solve it within the next 2 days, you do not have to worry about her schedule on Health Care"? This is Mr. Altman saying that you told him this in his notes, and he quotes you on this. I know you have heard about the diary and you have had occasion to see these notes. Did you have a conversation with Mr. Altman about Whitewater and the impact it was having on the First Lady? Ms. WILLIAMS. To the best of my recollection, I did not have a conversation with Mr. Altman where I characterized Mrs. Clinton as paralyzed. First of all, if you look at Mrs. Clinton's schedule in December, in January, in February, paralyzed would be far from the word one would use to describe her. So I just find it difficult to think of myself as having said the word paralyzed. Additionally Senator D'AMATO. But did you have a conversation with him in which you may have expressed "paralyzed" and he used it and he quoted you, you said "paralyzed", and he puts it in quotes? Did you 279 have occasion to speak with Mr. Altman as it related to the impact Whitewater was having on the First Lady? Ms. WILLIAMS. Senator D'Amato, as I had said before, to the best of my recollection, I did not have a conversation with Mr. Altman. Senator DAMATO. All right. That is, you know you had conversations but not as it related to the mental state of the First Lady in relationship- Ms. WILLIAMS. Senator, may--excuse me, I do not mean to interrupt but I think that I can give you more help in clarifying my state of mind, which I am happy to talk about. My state of mind during this period was that I was saying to everyone, Mr. McLarty, anyone who would listen to me on the staff, that Whitewater was a distraction from the President's agenda, and we needed to work on a coordinated response. So that is what I was saying during that period of time. I would never talk about Mrs. Clinton's state of mind to anyone, so I am surprised to see that Mr. Altman has quoted me in a diary saying so. I would not say that. Senator D'AMATO. OK, he has one other thing. He says, "Maggie's strong inference was that the White House was trying to negotiate the scope of an Independent Counsel with Reno, and having enormous difficulty." Do you recall ever speaking to him about the Independent Counsel and Mrs. Reno negotiating the scope, and they were having enormous difficulty? Ms. WILLIAMS. Senator, I can say with absolute certainty that I did not have a discussion related to the scope or negotiating the scope. senator D'AMATO. Limiting the scope? Ms. WILLIAMS. Yes. Senator D'AMATO. OK, all right. It is just in the diary and it is something, I think, that if it came to your attention, you would ask the same thing, but we will get back to that later. Thank you. The CHAIRMAN. Beatlemania! Uproar Greets Their Return Home
Twelve thousand screaming teenagers jam London Airport to welcome the Beatles back from their U.S. triumphs. Our staff scientist -- in an odd moment -- calculated that this young mob generated enough energy to put three Atlas missiles into orbit and to power fifty four thousand transistor radios. The Beatles did what the Redcoats couldn't do in the American Revolution -- they conquered the Colonies. Beatles exit plane displaying words "Jet Clipper Beatles" and wave to their fans. London, England London Air Port Control Tower, evening time. MS - Welcome Home Beatles spelled out in flowers. Teens laying on the floor of the airport waiting for the Beatles arrival home. MS - Dawn coming up with the sun rising in the sky. MLS - Airport building, teenagers standing shoulder to shoulder on the top of an air port building. CUS - Teenage girl, crying, running her hands through her hair and moving about. CUS - Jet Clipper Beatles, shades pulled down on the air plane. More teens lined up on the building holding signs and banners, welcoming home the Beatles. MCUS - The Beatles disembarking from their flight. All kinds of cheering going on. CUS - Teenage girls crying, jumping up and down MLS - Pan Am Jet Liner with the Beatles disembarking and throngs of people surrounding them. CUS - John, Paul, Gerorge and Ringo smiling CUS - Britain Bobbies standing behind an 8 to 10 feet wire fence, the crowd is right up on the fence. CUS - More teenage girls jumping, and crying.. Aerial shot - Throngs and throngs of people, one young fan fainted and is being carried away by the Bobbies. MS - Airline personal (pilots and attendants looking out the window of the building and their cracking up. MS - Police officer or pilot pulling a teenage girl over the fence, she is more than likely fanning a faint. CUSOH - The Beatles. LSOH - The crowd waving, jumping and crying. OHS - This looks scary as the Bobbies and Security Personal escort the Beatles into a van.
Yesterday's Big Story - War Crimes Trial
With victory in World War Il, the Allies turned to fixing the guilt of those responsible. Marshall Henri Petain was condemned to death and then exiled instead for collaborating with the Germans after the fall of France. Vidkun Quisling was hung in Norway for betraying his fellow countrymen. In Japan, Pearl Harbor Premier Hideki . Tojo was hanged. In Germany Heinrich Himmler, head of Hitler's secret police, committed suicide rather than face trial. The most famous hearings were in Nuremberg where 21 high Nazis faced their accusers. Twenty-one were found guilty and ten were executed --- but the misery and horror they spawned lived after them. Paris, France - Marshall Henri Petain wearing his uniform walks into a French courtroom for his trial on collaborating with the Nazis. MS - A very crowded French courtroom, Marshall Henri Petain sitting in a chair in the courtroom. CUS - Vidkun Quisling of Norway being tried for treason by his countrymen. CUS - Prime Minister, Hideki Tojo disembarking from a train MCUS - Japanese political and military leaders, also referred to as the "Big Fish" . The accused group included former prime ministers, foreign ministers, economic and financial leaders, ambassadors, war ministers, navy ministers and senior military officers. CUS - Hideki Tojo with hat off. MS - US MP standing over the body of Heinrich Himmler who committed suicide. MCU - Heinrich laying dead on the floor. The Naval Academy lets loose the small fry ..... sons of Academy personnel. It's their annual boxing tournament. When miniature arms start swinging' -- you'd better duck. MCUS - Bell is rung and there are two little guys in a boxing ring. These little guys are going at it. MOHS - One little guy punches him in the head and he falls down. One little boxer has head gear and the other little guy has none. The little boy with the head gear knocks down the little blond haired boy and he runs to his corner.

Mrs. Johnson Tours Space Center
The First Lady returns to Alabama - scene of her childhood. Things have changed. For instance, the Huntsville Space Center was not there then. Huntsville, Alabama The First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson is a guest at the Huntsville Space Center and she is accompanied on her space tour with 59 relatives, ranging in age from 8 to 87 years old. MS - Lady Bird and her entourage are getting a grand tour inside the Giant Space Hanger. MS - Standing behind a roped area the throngs are watching the First Lady and family. Outside shot - Rockets on a launching pad, blasting away as a demonstration firing for the Lady Bird.. CUS - One of the Space officers standing with Lady Bird inside a bunker watching the rocket demonstration going on. There is enough trust in these engines for a lift off from Cape Kennedy to the moon.

For the first time in more than a quarter of a century. (09:45:15) Ms. Williams, I am just curious. Where is your office located in the White House complex? Ms. WILLIAMS. I share an office with staff members in the old Executive Office Building of the White House complex, and then I have an office that is my own in the West Wing of the White House. Senator SARBANES. And where is it in the West Wing, in proximity to Mr. Mclarty? Ms. WILLIAMS. It is on the second floor of the White House. Mr. McLarty's office is on the first floor. Senator SARBANES. Is the Counsel's Office near you, the White ..House Counsel's Office? MS. WILLIAMS. Yes, it is. It is very near, down the hall. There is only one other office between my office and the Counsel's Office, Mrs. Clinton's office. 280 Senator SARBANES. Now, how did you ever get to the meeting Of February 2nd? Ms. WILLIAMS. How did I get there, sir? Senator SARBANES. How did it come that you were at that meet- ing? MS. WILLIAMS. My assistant told me that there had been a call from the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President. And Of course if you get a call from that office, it would serve you well to be at that meeting. Second, I am an Assistant to the President, in addition to my du_ ties as Chief of Staff to the First Lady and so it is not unusual for me to be invited to any number of meetings on issues concerning the White House as a whole. Senator SARBANES. So you got there because Mr. McLarty's office called and said you should go there? Ms. WILLIAMS. That is correct, sir. Senator SARBANES. Mr. McLarty was not at that meeting? Ms. WILLIAMS. That is correct, sir, Senator SARBANES. Did you feel you were there sort of in place of him? MS. WILLIAMS. In place of Mr. McLarty? Senator SARBANES. Yes, since he was not there. Ms. WILLIAMS. Oh, no. I thought I was there to be myself Senator SARBANES. All right. Now you have recounted what transpired at that meeting. Was it the next day that you had this meeting with Altman? Ms. WILLIAMS. As I said before, I believe it was 2 days later, although my recollections may not be specific, but I believe it was shortly after the meeting. Senator SARBANES. Well, Mr. Altman says it is the next day. Are you saying it was not the next day but 2 days later? Ms. WILLIAMS. No. What I am saying, because it was an impromptu meeting, and does not appear on my calendar, I recall it as being maybe 2 days later. It could have been the next day. I would not challenge that recollection. Senator SARBANES. Now, did Altman call you to have that meeting. Ms. WILLIAMS. Mr. Altman did call me. Senator SARBANES. He says that he called Ickes. MS. WILLIAMS. Well, as I recall, Mr. Altman called me and he asked me to assemble a group because he wanted to tell them that he had decided not to recuse himself, and that meeting Senator SARBANES. You are very clear about that, that he called you? Ms. WILLIAMS. I am very clear about that, yes, sir, I am. Senator SARBANES. He called you and asked you to assemble a group. Why did he want to assemble a group? Ms. WILLIAMS. I do not know what his specific motivations were. Senator SARBANES. Why did you think he was-what was your reaction to this call from Mr. Altman saying, I want you to assemble-did he tell you what group to assemble? 281 Ms. WILLIAMS. As I stated before in my testimony, let me try and take those questions one at a time. I am not sure whether or not he told me who should be assembled or if I guessed at it. With respect to the reason for having the meeting itself, Mr. Altman seemed to be clear he wanted to tell people at the White House that he was not going to recuse himself That seemed to be the purpose of the meeting. Senator SARBANES. Now who did you assemble for that meeting? Ms. WILLIAMS. I called the White House Counsel's Office. I do not remember if I spoke to Mr. Nussbaum and he was not there, and I reached Mr. Eggleston. I do not know which of those two from the Counsel's Office came. I called Mr. Ickes and I called Mr. Stephanopoulos, and I think that is about it. Senator SARBANES, Now do you remember who was at the meeting? Ms. WILLIAMS. I remember Mr. Ickes being there. I remember Mr. Stephanopoulos being there. I cannot recall if it was Mr. Nussbaum or Mr. Eggleston, but it seems to me that someone from the Counsel's Office was there. Senator SARBANES. Anyone else? Ms. WILLIAMS. That is all I recall coming to the meeting. Senator SARBANES. Tell me about that meeting.
Alaska Digs Out: Rebuilding Begins In Wake Of 'Quake
Devastated Alaska begins the task of rebuilding after the greatest earthquake ever recorded. Anchorage was in the center of the severe shock that ripped down Fourth Avenue, the main shopping street. Stores were crowded with week-end shoppers. The far-flung disaster area was spared, miraculously, large loss of life. Property damage and loss is staggering. Conservative estimate: $500,000,000. In the residential district, in the coastal fishing towns, everywhere there is devastation. Kodiak, Seward, towns that have almost been leveled have vowed to rebuild. Alaska, with the spirit of the pioneers, starts the gigantic task. Visible cracks in earth. Alaska The streets, the sidewalks and some buildings upheaval. MS - You can see how one side of the street is raised above the other side, and some buildings that seem twisted. MS - One side of the street dropped into a sink hole. MS - As you look down this street you see how it looks like a roller coaster ride, parts of the street are missing. MS - The street heaved up so much the man on the street can touch the bottom of a sign that was two stories high. MS - On the other side of the street this building sustained no damage. MS - Rescue workers looking for survivors in this department that collapsed. MS - Man operating a crane lifting huge pieces of the building looking for survivors. MS - A early Corvette that got hit in the back from a piece of falling building. Camera panning - Over the ruins of the collapsed buildings and heaved streets and sidewalks. Buildings that their second floors are now first floors. MS - Towns outside the city limits, huge cracks in the earth and houses sinking into a sink holes. A tilted home that half way sunk into the earths opening. MS - Huge crack in the earth's crust. MS - House is off its foundation and landed up in a tilted position. MS - Kodiak to the South-West was almost knocked out, after suffering an earthquake it also suffered three title waves. A fishing boat landed up on dry land and most of the buildings that were three and four story are now two-story buildings. MS - A completely demolished car. MS - Two boats on dry land, cars and buildings around the boats are smashed to smithereens. MS - All you see left of a house is the roof and attic. MS - A house that fell backwards MS - Part of a hospital's roof that collapsed. The lobby of the hospital is completely ruined. MS - Inside a library all the shelves are toppled. MS - Inside a grocery store all the can goods ended up on the floor. Employees cleaning up the mess.
