MS - Pole volt, as the athelete runs with the pole, goes up in the air, and just as he reaches the top, his pole snaps. MS - the next pole volter runs and makes the volt at 16 feet. One-Man Gyro-copter
A one-man helicopter called the Gyro-Copter' is introduced in Florida as a possible boon to long distance fishermen. Easily maneuverable and carrying a load of 250 pounds (pilot included), it operates about as easily as an outboard motorboat, but with far greater range. The inventor of the Gyro-Copter getting ready to take it up and out to a fishing spot. The Tacoma Bridge Collapse
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge, dedicated in 1940 was the pride of the Northwest. Then the third longest suspension span, it came to be known as Galloping Gertie as it swayed in the winds sweeping up Puget Sound. Four months after it was dedicated those winds sent the bridge into a rhythmic dance of death - it literally shook itself to pieces. These pictures of the bridge's collapse have been acclaimed as some of the greatest ever filmed. After World War II a new bridge was built, but Galloping Gertie will be long remembered. Fires Ravage East 350 Homes Destroyed In New York Area
Whipped by constantly changing winds, devastating fires raged from Maine to Virginia in a week-end of holocaust. In Bayonne, N.J., Five factories were destroyed; in Brooklyn firemen fought a fire in an oxygen plant. The worst fires, however, occurred on Staten Island, part of New York City, where it was a 24-hour battle before a hundred separate fires could be controlled. Half of New York's fire Equipment fought these blazes. Aerial shot a whole area is on fire, you can see the spray from the fire hoses. Liberals Take Over In Canada
The Liberal Party moves in to head the Canadian Government as the new Prime Minister, Lester B. Pearson is sworn in and forms a new Cabinet. This ends the regime of John Diefenbaker. There was a special election to see if Canada would accept the United States Nuclear Weapons, Diefenbaker said no and Pearson said yes, therefore winning the election and becoming the new Prime Minister and he was also the first Canadian to win the Nobel Peace Prize. with his groundbreaking work at the United Nations and in international diplomacy, Pearson can safely be regarded as one of the most influential Canadians of the twentieth century Toronto, Ontario Outside shot of Canada's Government House.
