Powerboat Thriller
The British motorboat drivers hold their 80 mile race on a choppy sea. The pace reaches 50 miles an hour and frequently more. Tommy Sopwith gets the checkered flag only to be disqualified for missing a buoy. Keith Horseman wins. The start of the annual 80-mile race staged in the English Channel by the English Motor Boat Drivers. MS - At times these boats are traveling at 50 MPH, with some of them becoming airborne for a few seconds. MS - Sea is very choppy and the pilots of the boats at times have a hard time hanging on. Medium CUS - Number 8 driven by Sopwith gets the checkered flag declaring him the winner. But as faith would have it, Sopwith was disqualified for missing a buoy and Keith Horseman who piloted Buffins Coffin Number 1 is declared the official winner of the English Channel Race.

Pennel Sets Pole Vault Record
Pole vaulter, John Pennel of Glendale, California, sets a new world record mark for an event, clearing 17 feet, six and one quarter inches at the Los Angeles Time International Games. 26 year-old Pennel eclipses the old record, held by roommate Bob Seagren. John Pennel, a pole vaulter, shows style and grace as he clears the bar at 17 feet. High Angle Shot - Track and field fans applauding John Pennel s pole vaulting skills. High Angle Shot - The bar is set at 17 feet and 6 and 1/4 inches and John Pennel takes on the jump and misses his first try. High Angle Shot - Paul Williams runs and is going to do the vault but at the last minute cancels out and instead of going over, he runs under. MS - A third and final attempt by 26 year old John Pennel. John runs, takes the jump, and he is over the vault. It is certified and noted by track officials that John Pennel broke the record pole vault jump. Low Angle Shot - Track & field fans applauding John's performance. Free-Fall Thrills: Army Team Tests New Parachute
At Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the US Army parachute team, "The Golden Knights, put the new Rogallo "Flexwing" parachute through some fancy paces. Spectacular free-fall maneuvers test the 'chute for future military or civilian use. Standing in back of a single engine US Army plane taking off. CUS - Inside the plane, the door is open and there stands an Army skydiver. He jumps out of the plane backwards while looking at the camera. Air to Air - Shot of the Army skydiver free falling, moving his arms as he spins his body "slowly" around. CUS - Bringing in his legs in a bit and moving both arms forward as he does a summersault (somersault) while free falling, He spins one way and does a reverse spin. CUS - Moving his arms and legs into another position. He manages to do a backwards summer sault. Low Angle Shot - The skydiver slowly descends with his new 'Flexwing' opened. It's a very standard type of chute used by today's jumpers. His landing is on-spot perfect.
Death Valley Hiker
28 year-old Jean-Pierre Marquant, a former French paratrooper, finishes a seven day, 100 mile hike across Death Valley, California and becomes the first man in history to walk across the hottest spot on earth. Ground temperatures reached 190 degrees! Wide angle shot of Death Valley Desert and the camera pans up showing the glare of the hot sun. CUS - Young man wearing sunglasses and a small brim cowboy hat. MS - With his back pack (backpack) on his back and a pair of shorts, he turns away from the camera and starts walking. CUS - His sneaker-covered feet walking on the floor of the desert. It looks very rocky and hard to walk on, but Jean Pierre pushes on. Extreme -CUS - Jean Pierre drinking from a metal canteen; that water has to be very, very warm. MS - Getting hot, and the sun beating down, Jean Pierre seeks the protection and a little shade of an umbrella while walking. MS - Hills and mountains in the background. MS - Walking with an umbrella, camera pans down to the rocks on the floor of Death Valley and Jean Pierre Marquant keeps on walking towards the mountains.
County Sheriff's Salinas Rodeo
The annual Monterey County Sheriff's Rodeo in Salinas, California brings out the best of the bronco-busting, bull-riding set. For a finale, the mad bareback riders stampede, and the field is full of wild broncos and scrambling riders! Every third week in July, cowboys and fans attend the traditional rodeo competitions, bull riding and other rodeo related events that are held. High Angle Shot - The rodeo stadium is packed with police officers and rodeo fans. MS - First gate opens and a cowboy comes out on a bucking bronco. The ride does not last too long before the cowboy is picking himself up off the ground. MS - Another cowboy, another bronco and another fall. MS - Fans in the stands enjoying the show. MS - It's bull riding time, and this bull is ornery and the cowboy is thrown off the bull's back. Medium CUS - Another bull comes out of the gate, but this bull has a very determined cowboy sitting on his back. He is determined to stay on the bull, but the bull is just as determined to get the cowboy off his back. In time, the bull shakes him off. Medium Wide Shot - They open the gates to a lot of cowboys riding bucking broncos.
Five Nations' Swim Meet
American swimmers take six out of eight events and outscores the Soviet Union 11 to 6 in the two day, five nation swim meet in Moscow. Don Schollander, Olympic champ, wins both the 100 and 100-meter men's free-style events. The women competitors dive into the swimming pool and swim the 100 meter breast stroke. CUS - The first and second place winner stand side by side. MS - The men dive into the pool and they swim the 100 meter free style. Air Force Pilot Wayne Spelius, 24, of Deerfield, Illinois is rescued from the waters of the Gulf of Tonkin, North Vietnam only five minutes after bailing out of his fighter plane. Newport Society turns out for the wedding of Janet Auchincloss and Lewis Polk Rutherfurd. In attendance were Mrs. John F Kennedy, the bride's half sister, and Caroline and John Kennedy, who were both included in the wedding party. Fashions From Jamaica
A preview of what the well-dressed ladies and young ladies will be wearing this fall. Shot at Montego Bay, Jamaica, the outfits include skirts and sweaters, knit suits with dickeys, weskits, and the widely-traveled (popular) poor boy sweater and skirt outfit. Models disembarking from a Pan American flight. MS - First model has a red woolen blended suit. The next model has a dark blue woolen blended suit, and the third model is wearing a straight dark skirt and a printed blouse. MLS - At an old fort (ruins), the three models have changed into slacks and a sweater, a two piece suit with her jacket open to expose a mock turtle neck sweater, and the third model is wearing a plaid skirt and sweater. MS - A teenage model wearing an over-the-knee pleated skirt and a double-breasted suit jacket and a dickey. CU - Another teenage model wearing a camel colored pleated skirt, button-down vest, and a long sleeve printed blouse has her hair in a poodle cut. Old Timers Game
At New York's Shea Stadium, over 51,000 baseball fans honor Casey Stengel on his 76th birthday. The occasion is the annual Old Timers Game, pitting National and American League All-Stars against one another. The Nationals win, 2 to nothing.
